  1. Review titled Totally unable to contact GP, whether by phone, email, or website

by Anonymous - Posted on 05 April 2024

Where do I start? 1)The main problem is the poor accessibility to a GP. Even if you ring dead on 08.00hrs there are 40-50 people ahead of you. You can no longer email the GP with simple questions that just require a yes/no answer. When I rang this afternoon the receptionist was curt and refused to take a message, telling me to ring at 08.00hrs the next day instead. I only wanted to ask for new medication that has been recommended by the consultant to be added to my list of other drugs and to chase up referrals. As someone with multiple conditions and multiple consultants it is a relief that I can contact them easily via their secretaries, and get a response within a couple of days or an appointment. I hate to say that I now rarely contact the GP, and go straight to the consultant (via the secretary) instead. Unfortunately patients, me included, just put up with symptoms of potentially life-threatening conditions as they are put off trying to contact the GP(as in my case). Having to give details of your condition to a non-medically trained person is not condusive to phoning either. 2) Even though I had been told that I needed my stitches out on a certain day post-op I was told to ring on that specific date rather than try to book early. I only got an appointment because I pushed hard for it. 3) I can't book an appointment ahead of time, even when I have been told that I need to be reviewed after a set period. 4) For people with long term conditions they need to see/speak to the same GP each time, as that will not only speed up the process (the doctor will already know about them thus negating the need to go through all their medical history again) and there will be some consistency of care. I have never spoken or seen the same doctor twice. 5)One way to save time, would be for GP's not to do annual reviews of a longterm condition if a consultant is seeing the patient regularly for that condition anyway. I no longer bother going to my annual GP review of my condition. I know that there are fewer GP's, more conditions and treatments available and more patients but the GP service in the UK has gone downhill, especially since covid. Sadly the poor GP service is having a detrimental effect on the hospital service, especially on A&E. Why is it that my sons can get appointments easily and quickly without the hassle in London under the NHS,but I can't in Plymouth? I know that some of these comments relate to many other practices as well and not just yours, but now I've got all my complaints off my chest I feel better.

multiple arguments with doctors, even though trying to explain about all the correspondence I have from the specialist, they obviously don’t read anything, refused my ENT appointment, that a rheumatologist wanted me to be seen by, looking for arguments, writing on NHS app that I am complex, when all they had to do is read the evidence , will be looking for another Doctors surgery, I think I have had a misdiagnoses and will if proven right, not be very happy, they seem to diagnoses a lot of women with fibromyalgia to save money, on the nhs

Extremely long call wait times just to speak to someone (45mins or longer in my experience). forced to listen to a political opinion by a doctor whilst waiting which has been on their phone hold system for over a year. Appears to be little regard for the equality act 2010. The elderly and the most vulnerable, those less able to use internet technology have no choice but to wait extremely long call wait times and then hope that the receptionist shows pity on them when they plead for an appointment. A traumatic experience just to get to speak to a human. The need to constantly reorder medication and chase because the Pharmacist doesn't receive the prescription. Being told to make sure you reorder only to have to go through a the same old long winded process to chase if you don't have internet. Managing to get an appointment but not at your local surgery, having to get yourself over to a different surgery miles a way whilst in pain. That's just my experience for one year, don't get me started on the previous year

Dear Patient, We are very sorry to hear of your experience. We receive on average 1000 calls into the surgery every day and therefore our telephone lines are very busy. We are working hard to answer these calls quickly however there is a big demand for appointments when the lines open at 8am. We have recently upgraded our telephone system, and this is making a difference to our wait times. We understand that telephone waiting times can be frustrating, but we can suggest other options to contacting the surgery without having to telephone us or come in. We use a program called Patient Triage via our website from 7am each morning, which enables patients to contact us with minor problems, admin requests and test result queries. You do not need to sign up to this. It is a simple online form which is submitted to the surgery electronically and can be found on our website under online consulting. Other options are signing up to online services via our receptionists. This will enable you to book your own nurse or health care assistant appointments, check tests results and view parts of your medical record. We do hope that this will provide you with a satisfactory resolution to the issue you raised. Once again, Pathfields Medical Group thanks you for taking the time to write this review and can assure you that all issues are used as a reference point for our further learning and development as a practice. We always strive to provide our patients with a high standard of care and to develop, it is important to receive your feedback. Many Thanks Pathfields Medical Group

  5. Review titled Dismissed and moving the pressure elsewhere

Rated 2 stars out of 5

I rarely call the GP as I appreciate that they are under a lot of pressure. However I feel that I was dismissed with call 111 or go to ED. As I work in an industry that works closely with ED I know that turning up adds pressure to an already under resourced service. I needed to talk to a local GP to discuss a medical concern that was worrying me and has been for a short while. Even before I was able to explain I was told “sorry, we’re full, call back tomorrow. No consideration for triage. The only triage that seems to happen is who is in the queue first. A real disappointment.

Thank you for your feedback regarding Pathfields. We take all feedback both positive and negative very seriously. I am sorry to hear you have been struggling to obtain an appointment. Unfortunately, we are extremely short of GP’s appointments, as much as we wish we could book patients in routinely on a regular basis, this is not always an option which is why we ask that patients call or submit an online consultation via our website from 7am. You can call later in the day, but it will depend what capacity we are at when you call in as to if we can add you to our list for a call back however if you have a pressing medical issue and call in as close to 8am as you can, reception will be able to arrange a GP call back, a referral to the pharmacy, or signpost you with another service. Many Thanks Pathfields Medical Group

  6. Review titled Great experience

Phoned surgery with a problem in the morning at 8. Call answered promptly. Appointment arranged for 11am that same morning. Seen at approx 11.05. Thorough examination by a lovely doctor. Left the surgery feeling reassured. All in all a very stress free experience. I know the NHS is properly under the cosh right now - and there truly are some horror stories to be heard but I’ve never had any problems with Crownhill Surgery

I have been with this practice for 23 years and have seen a lot of changes during this time. It hasn’t always been easy to get an appointment but I can honestly say, that in my experience, everyone I have dealt with has been caring and helpful and have done their best to help me or my family.
