Glenfield Hospital provides a range services for patients, including nationally recognised medical care for heart disease, lung cancer and breast care.
Like the other hospitals within Leicester Hospitals, Glenfield Hospital is a teaching hospital and has a purpose-built Clinical Education Centre. The hospital has a helipad to allow rapid access for helicopters carrying emergency patients. The cardiothoracic unit has the only ECMO centre in the UK that offers treatment to adults as well as children. Glenfield is registered with ExtraCorporeal Life Support Organisation (ELSO) and is one of the world's most experienced hospitals in using ECMO. The specialist lung cancer centre has excellent lung cancer survival rates and an extremely active research programme. Around a quarter of patients are entered on clinical trials and surgery rates are among the highest in the UK.
The cardiology department is recognised as amongst the leading UK centres. It provides a 24 hour primary angioplasty service. It was the first unit in the UK to perform a percutaneous aortic valve replacement procedure. The electrophysiology unit has a well developed radiofrequency ablation service and is pioneering the use of robotic technology.
The Vascular service has moved to Glenfield Hospital from Leicester Royal Infirmary. Glenfield is home to a vascular in-patient ward, a treatment suite to carry out angiographies and a cutting edge hybrid operating theatre. This specialist theatre allows for high end X-ray images to be taken during surgery, improving results and reducing the need for more invasive “open” procedures. The team delivers a comprehensive integrated vascular, cardiology and cardiac surgery service for patients with cardiovascular disease.
The hospital is also home to a purpose-built Breast Care Centre where specialists help women through diagnosis, treatment and surgery and work alongside the plastic surgery team which has significant expertise in breast reconstruction.
