Pros and Cons of veneers – are they worth it?

Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain cemented to the front surface of teeth and are an easy way to address a variety of aesthetic issues. They can change the size, shape, and colour of your teeth if they are discoloured, chipped, broken, or irregularly shaped.

In this month’s blog we look at the pros and cons of dental veneers so you can have all the information to make an informed decision on whether dental veneers are the right treatment to meet your needs.

  • Whiten your smile

If you are looking for an easier way to whiten your teeth for good, dental veneers may be a good treatment for you. Veneers are largely stain resistant and should maintain their colour for the lifespan of the veneer. With a flawless smile your confidence and self-esteem will improve.

  • Fix minor problems

Slightly crooked or gapped teeth can be improved with dental veneersVeneers are applied to the front surface of your teeth – so although they don’t change their positions, they will camouflage slight teeth straightening problems once they’re applied. Your natural teeth will still be gapped or crooked but no-one will know aside from you and your dentist

  • Replace damaged enamel

Enamel is strong but can become damaged through over-zealous brushing or can be worn away by highly acidic food and drink. Veneers can provide a great treatment for teeth with enamel abrasion or enamel erosion, helping to strengthen and protect your teeth.

  • Natural looking

The porcelain veneer will closely resemble your natural tooth enamel, reflecting light in much the same way as natural teeth.

  • Fast results

Veneers can be completed in only two visits, providing a quick way to dramatically improve the appearance of your smile.

  • Little or no maintenance

Once the veneers are in place they require very little maintenance only brushing and flossing and regular hygienist appointments

  • Expensive

Veneers can be expensive, but with a 10-15-year lifespan they can provide a good investment for the future.

  • Susceptible to damage

Veneers are delicate and so can be susceptible to chipping, breaking and falling off. Though they can be replaced, this can dramatically increase costs.

  • Increased sensitivity

You may experience some sensitivity to hot and cold foods in the days following your procedure, but this will usually disappear and there are also dental products that ca help to strengthen the tooth enamel.

The team at Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre work closely with each of our patients to customise individual treatment plans that successfully meet their personal needs.  If you would like more information about dental veneers do not hesitate to contact Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre on 01622 682029 and one of our team would be happy to assist you.

Our New Year's Resolution

This year, here at Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre our new year’s resolution is to help you achieve the perfect smile.

A recent survey revealed that 3 in 4 UK adults don’t like smiling for the camera. A bright white smile can not only help you to appear younger and more attractive but can also help to improve your confidence and self-esteem.

Our fully trained team of dentists at Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre will work closely with you to develop a treatment plan designed to achieve exactly what you want from your smile makeover. This treatment plan may consist of many cosmetic and functionally restorative procedures, potentially including teeth whiteningveneersdental crownsteeth straighteningdental implants and facial aesthetics.

Here at Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre we are able to offer:

  • Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without damaging the tooth itself and there are two main forms of treatment available, either In Surgery Teeth Whitening or At Home Teeth whitening.

The darker your teeth, the longer your teeth will take to get lighter, but your dentist will be able to advise you on the expected time frame. You will need to have top up treatments every 1-2 years to ensure your smile stays looking great.

  • Teeth Straightening

In the past few years there has been a large increase in the number of adults looking to improve the appearance of their smile using new teeth straightening methods. Here at Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre we are able to offer InvisalignQuick Straight TeethDamon BracesSix Month BracesSocial SixLingual braces and Inman Aligners

  • Veneers

veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth.

Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten the front teeth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when teeth straightening is not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.

Veneers should last for many years; but they can chip or break, just as your own teeth can. Your dentist at Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre will give you an idea of how long each individual veneer should last. Small chips can be repaired, or a new veneer fitted if necessary.

  • Dental Implants

If you are missing some teeth, dental implants can provide the closest possible replacement to having your natural teeth back. Unlike bridges or dentures, dental implants are secured to the jaw using a titanium post, so they will not shift or move, allowing you to live life to the full, talking, eating and smiling with confidence.

You will need to attend for a consultation with the dentist to see if you are suitable to have dental implants. The dentist will need to assess the level of bone present in your jaw, if there is insufficient bone or it is not healthy enough, it may be necessary to perform a bone graft before the treatment can go ahead.

Call Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre today on 01622 682 029 to book your consultation and see what our dentists can do to help you achieve your perfect smile.

Why Does THe Dentist Need Your Medical History

When you first attend Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre   your local dentist in Maidstone Kent and at least every year from then on the receptionist will ask that you complete or amend your medical history. This is to ensure that the dentist has all the necessary information regarding your health to ensure that they can provide safe and effective treatment.

All this information is completely confidential and is held under the 1998 Data Protection Act. It may be necessary at times for your dentist to contact your GP, but we will always ask your permission prior to doing this and will only do this to ensure that any treatment will not be adversely affected by your current medication or health conditions.

  • Medication

It is important that the dental team have an up to date list of any medication you are on to ensure that the treatment they propose is safe. For example, if you take warfarin this thins the blood and means that prior to extractions or invasive dental procedures you will need a blood test to check your INR level and ensure that you will be able to clot and stop the bleeding following the procedure.

There are also medications that can mean you will need to be referred to a specialist oral surgeon for certain procedures. This ensures that there is adequate provision in place to manage your conditions that may not be available within general dental practice.

  • Antibiotic cover

Antibiotic cover is no longer considered necessary for patients with heart complaints or rheumatic fever. However, the dentist may well use a non-adrenaline anaesthetic if you suffer from these conditions.

  • Allergies

Please be sure to include any allergies on your medical history and this means that the dental team are able to ensure that they do not use materials or prescribe medication that may cause you to have an anaphylactic attack.

  • Diabetes

If you suffer with diabetes you are at higher risk of developing gum disease and so it is important the dentist is aware so can ensure you attend for more routine appointments. Diabetic patients may also take longer to heal following a procedure. We would advise that if you are diabetic you book your appointment early in the morning as this will reduce the risk of you needing to miss a meal.

  • Epilepsy

If you suffer with epilepsy it is important that the dentist knows so that they can have the appropriate drugs on hand should you have an episode during treatment. Epileptic patients find that they are more likely to suffer fits when they are stressed or anxious so it is important to make sure that you discuss any worries with the dental team.

  • Pregnancy

It is important to tell the dentist as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. The dentist will aim to leave any dental treatment until after the birth of your baby and will refrain from taking x-rays. During pregnancy some women find that their gums bleed and require closer attention. It may be worthwhile visiting the hygienist for regular cleaning and advice or oral care routines.

If you would like more information about how the dentist uses your medical history do not hesitate to ask at your next appointment. Call Maidstone Dental & Implant Centre on 01622 682029 and book a consultation today!
