  1. Review titled Fantastic and empowering birth experience

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 07 November 2023

After an awful first birth experience at another london hospital (c&w) I opted for st thomas’s for my second child whom I’d struggled to conceive. From the first booking appointment I felt listened to consistently and frequently walked through my previous Labour to work out what had gone wrong and to ensure it didn’t happen again. Notes were made on the system to ensure everyone I saw was aware too. Each scan was diligent and thorough and everything was explained to me as it went along. The actual birth experience was wonderful (even including an induction) and for the 12 hours I was in active labour my two midwives (one trainee) didn’t leave my side. They were constantly checking if I was okay, monitoring baby and giving me advice when I asked for it. They quickly got the doctor in when there was a brief concern but they knew what to do each time something changed anyway. I fortunately managed to deliver just before the end of their 12 hour shift. I felt so supported and safe the entire time (completely opposite to my first labour) and despite only meeting them that day felt like they knew me personally and were aware of my history without me having to tell them. I cannot thank the midwife team enough for such a phenomenal experience. My midwife even came to check on me and baby in the postpartum ward the next day. The postpartum ward is a bit of a nightmare - take earplugs and an eyemask!! But luckily we were only there overnight.

  2. Review titled Great Maternity Services

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I just gave birth to my second child here and that was due to my incredible experience from having my first child at St Thomas’. I cannot thank them enough… The antenatal services were great and i truly felt like mine and my baby’s wellbeing was always a priority. The great post-natal care too. The midwives during delivery were superb, my husband ran out to buy them chocolates shortly after we returned to the ward because we were just so pleased and grateful. Not to mention the bonus…stunning views of Westminster and The South Bank! I would do it again here in a heartbeat…! The midwives (although incredubly busy and stretched as with the rest of the NHS) are doing a fantastic job here.

  3. Review titled Nurse and Doctor poor service

Rated 2 stars out of 5

I understand that in a&e there is a lot of pressure for the staff, but I am not a person that just attends a&e for no reason I have not attended for many years, to be told that if I leave it will cost my gp£100, is not something that should be told to a sick person. I work and pay taxes in this country, I even work for the nhs myself and then to get to the assessment area and waited patiently for a Dr for 5 hours get seen and reviewed and then the Dr has to then speak to their senior to know how to deal with my case, waited for 1hour. When I then saw the Dr and just asked if there was any update. I get a attitude 'the Dr is with a sick patient' because I believe now I am being judged because the Dr don't feel my problem is big. Was it so difficult to come back 10minutes after you said you will speak to your senior and say my colleague is really busy at the moment so It may take a while, so I am seeing other people as you will have to wait. What has happened to communication. Then I see another patient older than me in pain so I ask if the patient had something for then pain and they had not even helped this older person, the patient had their own pain medication and as they was unable to walk I got them some water so they could help themselves to take their own tablets and then I went to the nursing desk to alert the nurse in charge and was dismissive 'oh they are all getting tablets' then the nurse turned back to the computer and chatting to the computer and ignored me when I was making them aware the patient had taken some painkillers so they could document. I understand there is pressure, in jobs but if you don't feel the compassion and care to people then why do the job, that is all apart of the experience of feeling better. People showing empathy can ease patients when in that already stressful environment. I am not saying all the staff are like that but there are a few amongst them and they need to communicate more effectively, people have to wait but explain to them. Advise them you will be number 30 in the line, when you go round to the assessment area you are just told to sit down and wait. They have a line system which they are aware which patients are next based on checking in, why can they not tell people at least they have something. Then you see them and say your going to get back to them, just inform the patient that whilst you are waiting, for their stuff they will be seeing others in between. So people are well informed. They just treat people inhumane no proper communication, it was so sad to sit there and watch. Especially the older patient we was there the same time and no one offered a drink of water nothing. The service is extremely poor I am so sorry to say that and that job is not for people that cannot work under pressure because they start to treat people like they are a burden. A lot of Dr's and nurses lack compassion. The love of helping people and treating people with kindness is gone its just a job very sad.

This was my first experience of the NHS as a recent arrival to the United Kingdom and I commend the staff on their friendliness, efficiency and professionalism while providing quality care and advice. From triage to consultation to radiography, the team at St Thomas' Urgent Care Centre were exceptional. Thank you for all that you do!

  6. Review titled 3months and it will be a year ....

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 19 February 2024

In three months it will a year that I was referred to this hospital and I still haven't received an appointment.... My consultant at another hospital and re referred me three times in this time time span and nothing ... No appointments no contact nothing ... I am told there specialist and the only ones that can help me .... I am starting to think differently cos why speacitist would leave an ill patient with no understanding of there condition for nearly a year ... Not a good one clearly ... But I am no doctor just my option ... Which isn't important as this hospital has made very clear ... I hope no one else has been treated so badly and I pray nobody has dyed because they haven't received any help by those doctors .

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Having had surgery on the 20th May 2023 I would like to say how pleased I was with the care I received - it was outstanding - from the surgical admission unit to the surgeons and threate staff. Special thanks is the the lovely nurse who spoke to me throughout my surgery, she was amazing. All the staff involved are not only a credit to the hospital but a also credit to the NHS, we should be proud of our NHS. So a big thank you, you do make a difference to people's lives so continue your great work.

  9. Review titled Do not have your baby here!

Rated 1 star out of 5

Shocking maternity service. Was put in a very hot crowded, dirty ward after the birth of my son, the staff lacked empathy, I couldn’t get my dietary requirements met ( I have Crohn’s disease and a dairy allergy) they couldn’t even provide the correct pans for a commode, a relative had to hold a pan underneath me. Was moved into a side room eventually but shower was blocked and flooded the room twice! Absolutely disgraceful!

  10. Review titled Made each day a little brighter for my mum

by Bromley cancer story - Posted on 15 June 2023

Mum passed away peacefully in front of family at home recently, after her 4-year ovarian cancer battle. She was under the care of some wonderful NHS teams. Her GP surgery for initial diagnosis and support and care throughout, the Guy's Cancer Centre team in SE1 for her cancer treatment care, with surgical care at St. Thomas's Hospital. She had over 22 sessions of chemotherapy and maintenance medications. In the 48 months of her care, we were very grateful for the NHS, as they provided the best care we possibly ask for. The GP helped her be referred to St. Christopher's Hospice for end-of-life care, and along with daily visits from the wonderful Bromley Healthcare team for injections, we helped manage her symptoms and to help her stay as active and mobile as we could. The day a sleek black wheelchair arrived she was very impressed and in turn, it led to a few memorable shopping trips to the local garden centre to stock up summer plants for the garden! Cancer is a nasty master indeed and she did feel very angry that it had robbed her of time with family and to do things in her beloved garden and sewing. She hated the way she was dying but had dignity and courage until the very end. As a family, we are in awe of all the wonderful and passionate people that came into Mum's life and made each day a little brighter for her.
