I attended Kingsbridge MIU today at 16.45 with a hand injury. I was quickly assessed and x rayed even though the department was due to close at 1700! Fortunately nothing broken but I felt reassured and given advice on treatment at home. I was back in the car by 17.15, so a huge thank you to the department and NHS !!!

  2. Review titled Ended up leaving in tears due to how I was spoken to.

Rated 2 stars out of 5

I dont normally complain but I ended up leaving in tears due to how I was spoken to. I had become very ill with a bad throat infection and I was unable to see my GP as I was away from home visiting family for a couple weeks, After my antibiotics hadnt seemed to work and felt as if it had spread to chest and ears, I was advised by 111 to visit a walk in centre so I could be examined properly. I looked on the NHS website to find where my nearest walk-in centre was, and kingsbridge came up. When I arrivedI did notice it said "Minor Injuries" rather than "walk in centre" but thought it may have been the same thing. I explained my symptoms to the receptionist and they were very polite asked what my problem was, took my info and pointed me in the direction of the minor injuries clinic. When I was seen to, the person who called me in didnt introduce themselves, but they asked why I was there, they took my blood preasure, temp etc. seemed very thorough, but after putting info into their laptop they said they got up and left. 5 mins later a nurse walks in and asks "what exactly do you want us to do for you?" I wasnt aware that I may had been in the wrong place, but theyre tone of voice made it seem like I was clearly in the wrong for being there. I explained that I was unable to go to my GP as I was away from home, I had called 111 and they advised me to go to a local walk-in centre to get examined to see if I need more antibiotics or other treatment. etc. they blunty replied and said "well we arent GPs here" so I said sorry I wasnt aware, I searched for walk in centres near me and this came up. They then reluctantly and quickly looked in my throat and looked in my ears and said they looked fine. I replied asking why might my ears feel completely blocked and uncomfortable, and they sharply replied "if I was a Dr I would be able to tell you" I felt their attitude was very poor, made me feel like I was stupid and in the wrong. I left on the verge of tears as i just wanted help and advice. I understand I may have been in the wrong place now but the NHS website didnt make it very clear that it was for minor injuries only. The receptionist could have told me then I might have been in the wrong place, but also the nurse could have explained and suggested somewhere else I could go to, rather than be rude and dismissive.

Thank you for taking time to leave details of your experience at the MIU Kingsbridge. I am pleased to read that you found our receptionist polite and welcoming. As administrators, our reception team are unable to signpost patients clinically and will direct all patients to triage for assessment. MIU Kingsbridge is staffed by a team of Nurse Practitioners and therefore may need to redirect patients to a GP or Emergency Department dependant on their presentation. I am sorry that the Nurse Practitioner came across as rude and unprofessional. I would ask that you contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01752 439884, or by email at plh-tr.PALS@nhs.net so that we can investigate further and provide you with a more personal response. With best wishes, Louise Huntley Operations Manager
