  1. Review titled Unprofessional Staff

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Aaron Martyn Elvis Jones - Posted on 12 May 2023

My wife was sent to Sandwell Accident & Emergency yesterday by her g.p. and was initially seen relatively quickly (though I stress 'relatively') and diagnosed with Bell's Palsy, she was then sent around to the Urgent Treatment Centre for a prescription and discharge. In the Urgent Treatment Centre the doctor had further concerns, however, since the Urgent Treatment Centre was approaching its closing time, my wife was sent back to Accident & Emergency. My wife was triaged again by a nurse who appeared to feel unheard ('I think it's Bell's Palsy, but I'm not the expert' and 'The g.p.s have got to stop sending people to Accident and Emergency Covid's over'). When my wife was seen by the Doctor, she was referred for a c.t scan. When we were sent to the waiting area for the c.t. scan, we could overhear the staff complaints about other wards, that a&e was terrible and that everyone who was approved before 20:30 had to be approved again. We then had an extremely long wait to see the doctor after the scan (approximately 2hrs); the one bright spot in the whole experience was a specialist stroke nurse, who took time to reassure my wife and let her know when the results were clear. The worse part of the experience was at 23:30 approx. after my wife had been there since 16:00; I asked the receptionist if there was anyone I could speak with who could give me an idea of how long we would have to wait. The Receptionist directed me to a door and told me to ask a nurse. Initially there wasn't a nurse there, however, one came in who completely ignored me. I realise staff have to be focussed on their patients, however, is it too much to ask that they acknowledge people? Even if it just to say 'Sorry, I can't help you now?' In total my wife was at the hospital from 16:00 to 23:45; I'm not entirely complaining about the length of time, I know the National Health Service is overstretched and under resourced, but, I do feel the majority of the staff we met were unprofessional in their manner and showed little interest in hiding any personal frustrations; they showed even less interest in acknowledging anyone not in their immediate sphere of interest. My personal rating of your Key Lines of Enquiry would be: Is it safe: adequate (I am glad my wife was thoroughly examined), Is it effective: inadequate (it might meet needs, but, not in a timely manner, Is it caring: Poor (you are not acknowledged if you aren't in the immediate sphere), Is it responsive: Poor (everything seems to be designed around staff needs), Is it well-lead: Poor (such unprofessional behaviour would not be tolerated in a well-lead organisation).

  2. Review titled Awful treatment

Having an elderly parent in hospital can be stressful enough. Add in the total lack of care, respect and dignity that, that person is shown is intolerable. The extremely brusque attitude of multiple staff on Lydon 5 & seemingly uncaring nature does not give any amount of confidence that your parent is being cared for. Unattended bay with several confused patients that are relying on other people's relatives to ensure that they don't have a fallout of bed or are not lying in faecal matter for 20 + minutes at a time (witnessed first hand) is completely unacceptable. When calling for assistance with either ones own relative or for another patient to be meet with arguments between staff as to who is going to help! Finding a parent in bed at 11am who has not been given breakfast or a hot drink is distressing and hearing that the HCA had 2 other people on that bay to feed and so your parent went without is wholy unacceptable. People do not recover without good nutrition and the right care. It appears this ward is a dumping ground for patients who seemingly the hospital does not know what to do with and likewise staff who wouldn't last 5 minutes on an efficiently run ward such as Priory 4, where the patient was moved from. Add into this the stark difference in cleanliness from one floor to another, you'd think you were in a different place altogether. Seriously Sandwell get your act together and sort out Floor 5, your staff and the equipment graveyard which appears on the majority of corridors.

I’m very sorry to hear about the poor level of care your parent has experienced on Lyndon 5. This is not the standard of care we would expect our patients to have and would like to investigate your concerns immediately. Please contact the Communications Department via email at swbh.comms@nhs.net so they are able to look into this further. With kind regards, Richard Beeken, Chief Executive.

  3. Review titled Very Attentive.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I suspected I had a broken rib from a backward fall down a step and after 4 days felt even worse. Due to an ongoing medical condition I was concerned. I was there 5 hours. They were not busy when I arrived but it did get quite a few more patients as lunchtime approached. However when I saw the 'on duty' doctor I was informed by him that he had read my notes so was concerned and asked me many questions. He was very kind and thorough. He wanted me to have Xrays so I did and waited for the results. Really happy to be told that nothing showed up to worry about. and if anything else cropped up to go back to them. I cant speak highly enough regarding their care so big thank you to them all especially the lovely Doctor.

  5. Review titled The wonderful care received by my elderly parents

    by Kent62 - Posted on 04 January 2023

My mother and father are 86 and 87 respectfully. At the end of November my father collapsed taking my mother with him. They were both taken by ambulance to Birmingham City Hospital, Dudley Road. My mother was treated in A&E for a fractured wrist and head injury and discharged home. My father was admitted and in hospital for 10 days. Subsequently he was admitted overnight to Sandwell Hospital for a different condition. I would like to thank the many staff who looked after both of them. Their caring and kindness during a period of high pressure in the NHS was exceptional. [Very happy with 'Staff attitude']

  6. Review titled Leep Procedure

Rated 5 stars out of 5

I really hope this reaches the ladies that looked after me. My appointment was at 3.50 in Gynaecology. 15/11/2020. I was a little apprehensive because I didn’t know what would be happening. But as the ladies both talked to me through they made me feel so at ease. Whilst one lady talked me through what was happening the other lady did the procedure. The most 2 loveliest ladies I have ever met. I hope they get recognised for my review.

  7. Review titled Thank you

    by plusmp76 - Posted on 27 February 2023

We came in with our 12-month-old son, who had a rare skin condition which makes children really poorly. He was canulated, had bloods and swabs and had to stay in for a few weeks. My child is very social, so being isolated was very upsetting to watch, but every single person working at the hospital who came to see him were honestly amazing, they all interacted with him, making him laugh, even gave him hugs that he requested all the time. The staff always made sure me and my partner as parents were cared for too, we had many laughs through the tough time, some hugs and lots of words of encouragement. They got us through the worst time of our lives. We will never forget the care and love they showed to all 3 of us 24/7. I'm so grateful for everything they have done on the road to my son's recovery. I will never forget what they have done for us. They were the light at our darkest time and we could have never got through it without their support and kindness, as well as the health care we received.

  8. Review titled Very long waiting time with child

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Rina - Posted on 16 November 2022

Came here with my son who has a nut allergy and had eaten something accidently. Was advisers by 111 to bring him in following his dateline shot. The nurses allocated him incorrectly so pushes him down the waiting list . Two sets of triage nurse. Was told by paediatric nurse will check if doctors wants to see him and waited over an hour for her to check this! When you have children coming in you want them advised sooner if they are ok to go rather than wait 3 hours. We we’re patient and appreciate every hist but the system could be made easier and quicker

Thank you for your recent review relating to your experience when bringing your son to Sandwell Hospital. I am sorry for the incorrect allocation and the delays that you faced. We try and see patients within a four-hour target time but understand some need to be seen sooner due to their clinical need. I apologise for the issues that you faced and will pass on your feedback to the A&E service manager so they can ensure that patients are allocated properly. 10. Review titled The worst care I’ve ever received

    by Jenr111 - Posted on 26 October 2022

I was admitted to Sandwell hospital towards the end of October after spending 8 hours in a different A&E department to find I possibly needed emergency surgery. I was admitted to the SEAU. I had a 13:15 appointment. I was seen almost immediately by a doctor who was very kind, compassionate and had my best interested at heart. Unfortunately I can’t say the same for any of the nurses on that ward. I found them all to be rude, obnoxious and did not want to listen to a patients opinion. The student nurse and the HCA’s could not be faulted though. As I suffer with mental health issues I have to have someone with me at all times. The ward refused to let my carer stay with me and we were both sent to sit on metal prison like chairs in the corridor and forgotten about. After over an hour in the corridor, my carer asked how long until they would have a bed for me, only to be told that they already had one waiting, no one informed us of this and had she not asked, we’d probably still be sat in the corridor now. I was then moved to Lyndon ward. The first nurse I saw could not be faulted. They were lovely, compassionate and knew how to make me feel comfortable, it’s a shame that can not be said for any other nurse on that ward. When the night shift came on, a nurse came in and tried to tell me I had to move from the side room into a bay. I explained that there were reasons I was in a side room and I was unable to be in a bay. They shrugged and said that if they had to wake me up to move me at 2:00 am then they would. I also asked for some medication as I was in a lot of pain and was left waiting over 4 hours for this, despite asking more than once. By the end of the evening, the night doctor came to see me. They were lovely, listened to me and provided patient centred care. I ended up self discharging as I felt uncomfortable and uncared for at Sandwell hospital. I would never go back.

I would like to apologise for the negative experience you had when visiting Sandwell Hospital. This is not the kind of care we would expect our patients to receive. I was glad to read that you did have positive experiences with some of our staff, however I recognise that we should deliver consistently good care throughout. Therefore, I would like your experience to be investigated further so that we can ensure the right care is given to our patients by all our staff. Would you be able to share your details with the communications team by emailing them at swbh.comms@nhs.net please? Kind regards, Richard Beeken, Chief Executive.
