  3. Review titled Not the best of experiences

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Chris Scanlon - Posted on 09 June 2023

Had a total knee replacement here in April under a spinal block and sedation. Unfortunately, I woke up on the operating table and could hear what was going on and see some blood on the screen and surgeons visor. I was asked by the nurse if the sounds were upsetting me but apart from this brief exchange I was left laying on my own listening to my operation being completed, instructions being given for the wound to be closed up and watch my leg being bandaged. I appreciate what happened to me may not happen to most people (everyone else I saw being brought into the recovery room whilst I was there was still asleep) and operating theatres are busy places but I would have appreciated some reassurance. I am not overly squeamish or sensitive but did find this upsetting. The following day despite having been sick more than once and being told I was not well enough to go home I was then told not more than an hour later you can go home if you want too. I was still in considerable pain, exhausted through lack of sleep and distressed by what had happened the previous day. At this point I felt under pressure with the expectation being that I would go home. There was no mention on my discharge notes of the fact that I had been unwell and despite feeling extremely hot and being sick no further checks had been carried out on me since the early morning rounds. The hospital itself is spotlessly clean and the majority of the staff are lovely but as one admitted to me they never really get the chance to know their patients as they are discharged so quickly. Nobody wants to stay in hospital any longer than they have to and perhaps if I had been asked "how I was feeling and whether I felt up to going home" I may have felt more able to say I didn't feel up to being discharged.

  4. Review titled Exceptional practice

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Stephanie Clarke - Posted on 25 March 2023

Last May 2022 I had a total hip replacement. The care I received was exceptional. Nothing too much trouble from start to finish. This year February 2023 I had a total knee replacement. Once again the treatment I received was exceptional. So well organised. The care I received from everyone was excellent. I would recommend Practice Plus to anyone waiting for hip and knee surgery. Both surgeons I had for my two surgeries were very caring. Follow up with Physiotherapy has been very supportive. Four weeks after my surgery I am surprised how well I have done. No pain at all. Exercise is very important to achieve success. I am now exercising with a pedal bike, doing squats and climbing the stairs. So thank you to all the staff at Practice Plus. Plymouth.

  5. Review titled Celebrating 6 months!

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Trudi - Posted on 21 May 2023

I think the saying 'times flies' couldn't be more apt on this occasion. Is it really 6 months since I had my total hip replacement? Thankfully the days when I was hobbling around with a stick are a very distant memory. No doubt the post-op exercise progamme I was given has hugely contributed to the fact that my recovery continues to go from strength to strength. I can well remember the days when I would wake up in the morning knowing that just putting one foot in front of the other would be a painful challenge throughout the day! Total hip replacement is major surgery but one that, in my case, was life changing which is why I would have no hesitation in recommending the wonderful medical and support staff at Plymouth Practice Plus if anyone is considering the operation. You'll be in very safe hands! Trudi

  6. Review titled Great experience

I can't believe it's now 3 months since my total hip replacement and its truly wonderful to be pain free! As this was my first time undergoing major surgery I was, understandably, feeling quite anxious. Thankfully, the whole experience, from my admission on Monday to my discharge the following day was extremely positive! Thank you to everyone at Plymouth Practice Plus for giving me my mobility back. I can't tell you how good it feels to finally put my walking stick to one side.

  7. Review titled Well Done

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Andrew - Posted on 06 March 2023

I underwent total knee replacement surgery as an NHS patient at Practice Plus, Plymouth in November 2022. From my initial consultation with a surgeon at Practice Plus to my recent post operative review appointment I have been impressed by the service delivered. Information, forecast timescales and advice provided at every stage has proved to be accurate - my surgery was actually undertaken slightly sooner than expected. As a patient, my judgement is that the organisation functions as an effective team striving to deliver a high standard of care throughout. This is not restricted to the medical and nursing staff, it includes physiotherapists, radiographers, the domestic staff, the cleaners, receptionists, administrators and the car parking supervisor, indeed the whole team. When contacting the organisation, my calls were always answered prompty and I was soon directed to someone who was able to answer my questions. Following the surgery, it was re-assuring to know that there was always somebody available to respond to any concerns 24hrs a day, a facility that I required when I had issues with healing of my surgical wound. I was always anticipating that recovery from knee replacement would be lengthy and painful and so it has proved. Nevertheless I have now reached the stage where walking is becoming much more comfortable and I am able to do things that have not been possible for a couple of years. I look forward to being able to enjoy mountain, coastal path and moorland walks once again in the very near future. My overall experience of Practice Plus Plymouth has been excellent and if offered a choice, I would have no hesitation in recommending Practice Plus Plymouth to others requiring joint replacement.

  8. Review titled Good practice without the large hospital chaos

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 09 October 2022

I had a Hip replacement completed on 3 October. Felt supported before and after the operation. Surgeon, anaesthetic team, recovery nurses and ward nurses were first class . Had a period of low blood pressure following my operation so wasn't able to get mobile until following day but received caring nursing support. The nurses on the ward were interactive and always available when you had in these circumstances ring Yr buzzer for alot of your needs, day and night. My only criticism is that I would have felt it would have been more advantageous to stay a second night because I had not been able to get mobile the first day because of low BP complications. I felt quite apprehensive as a result. The hospital is a less chaotic environment to larger hospitals, which can only make for a better experience in times of pre surgery worries.

Attended on Monday 1st August for cataract operation, from the moment I walked in I was totally at ease, every member of staff were so helpful and courteous towards me,the whole procedure was explained to me,which made it a lot easier for me as I was a little apprehensive. The whole thing was finished off with a lovely cup of coffee and biscuits.I would like to thank everyone who was involved and who I met yesterday for making it easy for me.I now look forward in visiting again shortly to have my other eye corrected

  10. Review titled Amazing hospital

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Elizabeth Hodgson - Posted on 17 April 2022

I had a total right hip replacement 13/04/22 and home the following day. The whole procedure went well and other than the discomfort of slight bruising I am, at long last, out of pain. Absolutely wonderful & amazing staff, so caring and considerate, I will never be able to thank you all enough.
