  1. Review titled Unacceptable A&E Wait Time

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 05 December 2022

Arrived at 09:45am on a Sunday morning with my 18month old who had a high temp & head to toe rash. Was advised the wait may be up to 14 hours (and some had been waiting that long!) and that only one parent could stay as they were so busy, which was very distressing for my child. After 3 hours one of the consultants came out to the waiting room shouting that parents needed to stop asking reception and the initial assessment nursing staff how much longer they would be waiting. I think this needs to be addressed and the staff need to be mindful that these are very worried parents with seriously unwell children who are being made to wait fourteen hours, and maybe adjust attitudes / patient care a little. In total we waited 6 hours to be told my child had a viral rash, only to take her to the gp the following day to find out she actually had Scarlet Fever / Strep a. Absolutely appalling from start to finish.

  2. Review titled We can’t praise the staff enough.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

    by D Harrison - Posted on 22 September 2022

We have spent a combined 16 weeks at Birmingham Childrens Hospital this year alone following our sons surgeries, with a great deal of that spent on Ward 11. Although all of the care we have received has been phenomenal, the staff on ward 11 are by far the best. They are a fantastic team of close knit nurses and doctors, expertly organised by the ward sister. The attention to detail on patient care, the kindness and consideration given to parents is nothing short of amazing. From the housekeepers to the nursing staff, there is very little that we could pick fault with ward 11. The only thing that could improve this already amazing ward, is additional funding for a refurbishment.

  3. Review titled Great service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

Me and my daughter came in the 29th for her surgery to the ward play and admissions. There was two lovely ladies who made me and my daughter feel comfortable before surgery. Was happy to sit, talk and play. Just feel guilty can't remember their names so they can get recognition they deserve. The surgeon and enthatist was also fantastic talked to me and my daughter all the way through. Made her comfortable with what she had to do when it came to going to theatre. They came and checked on us after which they don't really need to but did and wished my daughter a great recovery that was so nice. We didn't feel like another number in the system. The ward nurses were attentive and answered every question and made sure my daughter was comfortable and enough to eat and that she was well enough after. Even kept her entertained and talked to her all the way through. I can't complain once. All the staff I came into contact with that day made a difficult day so much easier and my daughter never once was upset and she is usually very vocal and emotional. My daughter was in many great hands that day can't thank you enough. Hopefully the people who did see to us do see this and see they hard work has been appreciated very much.

  5. Review titled Disgusting A&E waiting times

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 19 June 2022

I work in the NHS myself and to be told that we have to wait 4 hours to see a doctor is ridiculous. Especially considering this is A&E specifically for children. Other hospitals reject the children's and say please go to Childrens directly. After patiently waiting for 4 hours as told the waiting time shot up by 2 hours to 6 hours. People who came same time as us were being seen but not us. I again understand that there is clinical order but this simply cannot be allowed to continue. More needs to be down to see sick kids earlier or make other hospitals accept kids. Simply unacceptable!!

Thank you for getting in touch. Our Children's Emergency Department has been extremely busy over recent months despite our introduction of a secondary urgent care service. We try to keep waiting to a minimum and we know people will understand that some patients will require triage and be seen sooner. We are sorry for your wait but sincerely hope that your child received the care and attention they needed. With best regards, The PALS Team at BWC NHS Foundation Trust.

  6. Review titled Different visits with different experience

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 29 June 2022

We have visited the hospitals emergency few times. Each visit was with different experience. When my son was one he hurt his ankle really bad we have been admitted quite fast, he had x-ray and good check up on his feet. When he was around 2 he had some type of tummy bacteria this was way the worst experience as the waiting time was extremely long for child that small with diarrhoea, vomiting, tummy pain and dehydration. We ended up with beeing admitted and stayed overnight. He been in constant pain, crying almost all stay there, been given only calpol and fluids then next day for lunch for child with stomach problems he been served fish fingers, chips and some type of pizza thing... Then we have been there at the covid time after he fainted at school and hit his head on chair. This one was the best experiance out of them all he had everything checked almost streight away, blood, head, heart sugar level etc. Extremely professional. He also been twice with what happened to be sprained ankle one of it recently. We have been waiting 4h to be seen by doctor, arrived at 9pm there was looots of people waiting there, information on waiting time was between 7-9h. One lady next to us been waiting from 6pm and she been still waiting when they called us (i hope her daughter was alright). In overall it all depends on how much people is there, how much doctors is there and with what you are coming. I noticed that children with tummy problems or cough/chest problems been waiting the longest as there were so much of them :(

Thank you for taking the time to offer feedback on your visits to the Children's Emergency Department. We have experienced very high demand over recent months and waiting times will vary according to time of day, number of patients already waiting and severity. Patients are checked and some may be seen sooner due to needs. We have also introduced a secondary urgent care service to help us meet demand at all times. We have also introduced extra staff at busy times to support the waiting area with drinks, colouring sheets and interpreting support. We do seek to give a professional and comprehensive service for all patients and we thank you for your kind words about our professional staff. With best regards, The PALS Team at BWC NHS Foundation Trust.
