After a health check, in July 2022 I was told my cholesterol was high & to return in 3 months for blood test. Returned in February 2023 for another blood test and member of staff said that they could not understand why I had been asked to come back as, cholesterol had not flagged up as red. My cholesterol was 7.7, I said that I thought it should be below 5, I was told it should be below 6 & it was only slightly up. I was told that they would contact me within 2 weeks if there was a problem. I received a bulk text message a few days later advising that records indicated I was obese and to arrange for weight & blood pressure check. The use of the word obese in this text annoyed me along with many other patients, I am only slightly overweight. A bulk test was received a few days later apologising for the use of the word obese, as some patients had taken offence. I had not made them aware that I had taken offence and this text confirmed that I was not wrong in feeling the way I had felt. Let’s hope none of the patients who received the text have eating disorders such as bulimia. The use of the word obese is very emotive and one would have thought professionals would realise this. I have decided not to go for weight & blood pressure check after the experience I had with my cholesterol, is it high, or isn’t it? I went to the doctor today in relation to a different concern and while at this appointment was told that my cholesterol was high. No further advice or direction was given, leaving me confused, concerned & anxious. I arranged a blood test to check for gout and rheumatoid arthritis. I asked if I would have to arrange another appointment, I was advised I would not hear from them if everything was alright. One would have thought if they had ruled gout and rheumatoid arthritis, they would need to see me again perhaps to try and make a diagnosis. Perhaps medicine these days is about just ruling things out and not diagnosing. I said that I did not think I would be contacted with the result of these blood test if there was a problem as I had not been contacted in relation to my cholesterol results, the doctor had just told me that it was high. My records were check and said it was high but as it had been noted as improving, it was felt it was not necessary to contact me. One would have thought if it is still high, that I would have had to have it monitored to check it is coming down and it would have been useful for me to know that what I was doing was working. It would appear The Health Check is just a box ticking exercise and no doubt the same goes for the Weight Management Programme, so I see it pointless going to have my weight and blood pressure checked, if they are doing nothing with the results what is the point. I am none the wiser whether my cholesterol is a problem. The test I will be having are for rheumatoid arthritis and gout, will I ever find out what my problem is. Is it even worth bothering!
