  1. Review titled Can’t get an appointment

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Dave - Posted on 23 January 2023

Having to pay to go private because I cannot get an appointment at the surgery. This practice clearly only accommodates people out of work. If you call at 8am, you’re on hold for about an hour despite the surgery having a lot of admin / receptionists. I don’t have the time to do this and appointments aren’t available online. Total joke. I’ve been a patient for nearly 30 years and it’s gone downhill over the last few years probably because of change in management. Receptionists are rude and unprofessional, act like they’re doctors themselves. It’s really off putting when you call up. They have lots of training days but still don’t know how to answer a phone in a timely manner. Thank goodness I can afford to go private to be seen by a GP. Resource needs to be put in to ensure it’s easier for patients to get an appointment. Start answering the phone, put more appointments online. Stop making it so difficult to see a GP.

Dear Dave Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the services we provide. Online booking of appointments was suspended from end of November until the 9th January to allow us to to manage only seeing urgent on the day issues. Practices experienced a surge in demand on GP services and were instructed to implement such measure by our local inter grated care board. Appointments are now available to book online. We continually review our services and over the last year have made several changes to our appointment system, increased the number of appointments we offer, changed phone provider to include patient call back service, increased our workforce, new interactive website etc. We introduced learning/training afternoons in October 2022 for the first time ever and we now close at 1pm on every 2nd Thursday of the month along with other Practices throughout Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale. If you can email the Practice via gmicb-hmr.ashworthstreetsurgery@nhs.net with your details I can investigate your experience/concerns further. Kind regards Lisa Mitchell, Practice Operations Manager.

  3. Review titled Clearly don’t want patients

Rated 1 star out of 5

If you call for an appointment, you’re asked if it’s an emergency. No. If it was I would go to urgent care - GP surgeries are not for emergencies. Receptionists refuse to give an appointment unless you tell them what it is for. Why? I’m an adult and can decide for myself if I need to see my GP. I don’t expect to be interrogated by someone who has zero medical training. This is putting patients at risk. They also don’t offer face to face appointments despite me contacting our local mp who told them they must do better. Insisting someone has a telephone appt where they then have to attend the surgery for a face to face is a complete waste of everyone’s time and nhs resource. Not to mention means someone else misses out on an appt. Disgusting surgery. They close every first Thursday of every month for “training”. Seems highly unnecessary and doesn’t seem to be improving the service you receive. I’ve been a patient for many, many years and it’s a shame it’s gotten this bad.

Dear Patient Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the services we offer. Our receptionists are trained care navigators and will ask patients the reason for the appointment, this enables them to signpost to the most appropriate service or clinician. Depending on the patients’ presentation/symptoms patients are offered a choice of a telephone call or a face-to-face appointment. During December all practices experienced a huge surge in demand on services and to maintain safe levels of consultations, local commissioners put in place on the day urgent appointments only, removing the option for patients to pre-book a routine appointment until after the 9th January 2023. Since October 2022 all clinical and admin staff have taken part in the staff training sessions which allows our staff to take part in the training sessions organised locally and across Greater Manchester and gives staff protected time to complete annual mandatory training, i.e Chaperone, GDPR, Health and Safety, Basic Life Support, Carers awareness, Safeguarding, Care Navigation and many more . I am sorry to hear that you have been a patient for many years but feel recently our services are not meeting your needs. If you wish to join our patient Participation group to help shape future services, you can send an expression of interest via our website Signing Up For Patient Participation Group - Ashworth Street Surgery (ashworthstreetsurgeryrochdale.co.uk). If you would like to email the Practice either via our website https://www.ashworthstreetsurgeryrochdale.co.uk/have-your-say/ or via email gmicb-hmr.ashworthstreetsurgery@nhs.net with your details this will allow us to listen to the calls and assist you further in your query. Kind regards Lisa Mitchell, Practice Operations Manager

Always manage to get a quick appointment. You only need to tell the receptionist what’s wrong and someone phones you, then if necessary you see a doctor

  5. Review titled Poor

I needed an appointment and was told I would have to wait 3 weeks as there was no availability. My appointment was not a routine one. I was told the doctor would phone me between 12 and 6pm. As I work full time I cannot sit by the phone for 6 hours as I need to do the work I am paid to do. This is totally unacceptable to expect me to wait for 6 hours for a ten minute appointment. The surgery needs to realise that some people do have jobs or other commitments and should be able to give a smaller timescale. Would they let their staff sit around for 6 hours waiting on a personal phone call? I doubt it. I am left feeling so poorly and stressed with worry and having to wait for a call which I have had to take annual leave for. Hospitals are pretty much back to normal after Covid so no reason for GP surgery to still be in March 2020 mode.

  6. Review titled Not a clue

Rated 1 star out of 5

Due to the surgery being closed for the Platinum Jubilee my wife had to visit the urgent care centre at the Infirmary. She was given a sample bottle and told to hand it in to her doctors surgery as they don't deal with the results. Handed it in on Monday morning. Rang Tuesday and told they do not handle samples from other hospitals. No explanation, no sample and no results. Must be worst surgery in North West.

Dear Patient We cannot handle samples after 4pm as our last collection to transport the samples to the lab for processing is at this time. Samples in which are left with no clinical information as to what they are being tested for or samples that do not have all the patient details on can also not be be sent for testing. In order to investigate this matter further, I require patient details can you please contact the Practice either via our Practice Website contact us page, email the practice via - gmicb-hmr.ashworthstreetsurgery@nhs.net or telephone the Practice on 01706 346767 and ask for myself - Lisa Mitchell, Practice Operations Manager, I will be more than happy to help. Kind regards - Lisa
