  2. Review titled So unfit for purpose it's actually unbelievable

Rated 1 star out of 5

I've been recieving so called "care" from Greater Manchester Mental Health for many years. I've always been made to feel like I'm a drain on precious resources for asking for scraps. You're passed from pillar to post, nobody wants to deal with you, which when you have complex mental health is kind of the last thing you need. There are such long waiting lists for therapeutic interventions (1-3 years), and then when you get to the top of the list and are assessed they just tell you that you're "too complex" and need to be on the next waiting list, another 1-3 years, and so the farce continues. And then, when you can't cope and end up in hospital they say they'll take care of things when you're discharged, get you that care coordinator you've been on the waiting list for (for a year), get you back into therapy, get you more regular psychiatry appointments to review your medications etc. But when you're discharged it's just crickets. No follow-up, no care coordinator, no regular psychiatry appointments, no therapy referral. My psychiatry appointment was cancelled an hour before and they hung up before I could ask when it would be rescheduled for. I finally found out that it has been rescheduled for 3 months time. The community mental health team doesn't even return my calls. The crisis line, presumably set up for people in immediate crisis, doesn't pick up (oh yes, you can leave your name and number and they occasionally call back hours and hours later). I hope they realise that every time someone with a mental illness tries to reach out for support and is met with a shut door it is completely crushing. Absolutely pathetic excuse for a mental health service, and I assure you nobody will be held accountable

  3. Review titled Appalling

I rang because I was feeling incredibly suicidal. I was told to distract myself, watch tv or eat something. When I said I’d already done these things, because I’m not stupid and I know my mental health, I was then told to ring the Samaritans. Thanks for nothing.

  4. Review titled GMMH 24 Hour Helpline

Rated 4 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 23 July 2022

The helpline I have found to be excellent, although I totally understand frustration about it can take a few hours to get a call and the answerphone, they have so many calls and need more staff, so they can spend the right amount of time to help, otherwise they would have to rush people off the phone too soon before really helping, which would not be good for a lot of people. Most of the staff have been excellent and saved my life, there is always one or two that are not helpful but 7/10 have been life savers, really experienced and listened well and been able to at times to contact my GP or CMHT which has helped so much. I understand in a crisis more than you know sometimes, we need someone there and then, I wish I could triple their budget. I am just so thankful that when I first rang it I got a call back from a really good person. I would urge anyone to keep giving it a go, keep trying it. There are some real angels on there, and one or two not, but most are. Keep trying it until you get one of the angels. GMMH I would urge you to increase your budget for this helpline, so many calls show it is needed. Thank you.

  5. Review titled GMMH 24/7 Helpline Not Helpful

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 18 July 2022

The GMMH 24/7 Helpline is non-existent. I made 8 calls between a 90-minute period in the early hours of Monday morning to speak to someone. I was met each time with a minutes worth of music as though you are on hold for someone, then it went straight to the answer machine asking you to leave your name and number and someone will get back to you, I didn’t leave my name or number because past experiences tell me any call back often is hours later. Other issues to review, if the police refer someone to your service because they have concerns for their welfare, it might be a good idea not to call the person at 11pm at night, 24 hours later when there mobile is on silent, and then when you don’t get an answer, you ask the ambulance service to send an ambulance which then arrives at 5am (48 hours after the police incident) waking the person up, a complete an utter waste of NHS resources. GMMH just constantly pass the buck and are not fit for purpose as a mental health crisis service.

  6. Review titled Horrific.

Rated 1 star out of 5

Phoned the crisis helpline to get some support and help for a friend who is in a mental health crisis. I was met with the most unkind, unsupportive and unhelpful staff member I've ever encountered. I was told she could not speak to me even though my friend is mentally unable to speak for herself at the moment. I told her that my friend is having suicidal thoughts and I'm on suicide watch for her and she cannot be unsupervised and was told that she can't help without speaking to my friend. She sarcastically remarked, 'well if she's really that bad you need to phone 999 or go to A&E' as if we have not exhausted these. No wonder people do not reach out for help when this is what they're met with.
