  1. Review titled Frustrating A & E

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Lisa - Posted on 25 April 2024

After almost 12 hours in A & E and very little communication I feel I must leave this review. Sent here by GP for a MRI scan on spine. After booking in and triage (within 1 hour) left waiting for a further 5 hours to be taken for scan. After scan 1hr15 wait to be taken back to A&E with a further 3 hr 30 to be spoken to regarding the scan. Surely there is a better system? There was no one waiting in the MRI department and communication could be so much better. We were only updated when seeking out a staff member. There were many people, in obvious pain just waiting around yesterday, all day and the situation for wheelchair users was dire, with barely anywhere to go. It is obviously not a big enough space for the number of residents in and around Preston!

  2. Review titled Appointment constantly cancelled and rescheduled

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 25 April 2024

I've been waiting since my last appointment in November of last year for an appointment I was meant to have in February, which was to review a medication I was put on. This appointment got cancelled and then rescheduled till May. I have now just received a letter that it's been cancelled again and rescheduled for October. I was put on that medication to see if I needed surgery for my symptoms! I'm exhausted. It's impossible to get through to the gynae department through phone calls at all and I'm just so exhausted. My quality of life is deteriorating and nobody in the Royal Preston Hospital cares!

  3. Review titled Incompetent

Rated 5 stars out of 5

My severely disabled son, who can't speak had an IV sited under an ultrasound, three quarters of a saline bag was pumped into his arm tissue. His armed swelled, skin tissue was tight. This caused discomfort resulting in my son crying and having to take morphine in order to sleep. " This can happen it's not as uncommon as you think" was the response.

  4. Review titled Accessible toilets

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 28 November 2023

Preston hospital Wheelchair user, needed to use the bathroom before an appointment. Tried to use the disabled toilet near the main entrance just past the chemist. The smell I can not put into words, I was nearly sick. Couldn't bare the smell, tried to find another accessible toilet, next to the main canteen... locked from the outside. Staff didn't know why or couldn't point me to another that was unlocked. Squeezed the chair into a bathroom luckily. Door into the main entrance broken so people pushed past the Wheelchair to get through. It was a battle to get an disabled parking bay

Thank you to all the Critical Care MaxFax and Ward 3 teams at Royal Preston Hospital. Your dedication, caring, expertise and ability to inspire is second to none. I suffered physically and mentally but you picked me up and quite literally got me back on my feet. Thank you

  6. Review titled Good efficient service

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Carole - Posted on 13 November 2022

My mother in law attended A&E on Thursday 27th October on the recommendation of her Doctor. She was triaged within an hour. She had blood tests and x rays and an ECG within a couple of hours. She was informed that she would be contacted within 48 hours with an appointment to attend sdec/Same Day Emergency Care. She was contacted the next day to attend on the following day - Saturday. The department was spotlessly clean and the staff were kind and amazing. Several more tests later she was told that she would be admitted. She had a lovely meal and was given a night gown and bed socks. She said the food was exceptional. She had a comfortable night there and was admitted to the medical assessment ward the next day and from there to cardiology. I would like to thank everyone who looked after her so well and a special mention to the domestic and catering staff. Thanks Carole

I have had a week in this facility and the care has been second to none. My life has been greatly improved and I’m due to go home with a new vigour for life. A big thank you to all the staff, especially the nanny and the ‘head’ nurse.

  8. Review titled Royal Preston Hospital A&E visit

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Gary Usborne - Posted on 03 August 2022

Following a freak cycling accident, I presented myself to rph a&e department. I was immediately told to leave and visit a small hut outside prior to checking myself in (Covid check I presume) despite being soaked to the skin, cold and shivering, dripping in blood and being in chronic pain. Once checked in I was just left to sit with everyone else despite my fairly significant loss of blood (it was pooling on the floor beneath me). Eventually, following my wife's protests, I was triaged. At this point the realisation from the staff of my predicament finally kicked in and I was patched up, provided with pain relief and sent for x-rays. I was diagnosed as having a badly broken collarbone, open elbow fracture, significant loss of skin and severe bruising/grazing. Following an assessment by the orthopaedic surgeon, it was determined that I would need an operation for the elbow and a separate operation for the collarbone but there were no beds available so I was offered a chair in a draughty corridor. I sat in that chair for 16 hours! I almost passed out twice. I have a pretty decent pain threshold but I just could not get comfortable. Staff were apologetic but unable to offer anything. I could see that they were rushed off their feet. Eventually, I was informed that a hastily arranged pop-up ward had been made available so I was wheeled to the basement to finally get a bed. It was a huge improvement and made a real difference to my comfort level. The staff running the ward had been sent from Chorley so they didn't know where anything was or who did but they coped pretty well I thought. There were no toilets in the ward so we were forced to use bedpans (not a problem for me personally). The next day I became concerned about the worsening pain in my elbow and I began to suspect that it was infected. Thankfully, the orthopaedic surgeon agreed and I was booked in for my elbow op later that day. I woke up in a different ward and following some initial observations from the nurses I was allowed home. Apparently, there were no surgeons available to conduct the collarbone op so I would have to return at a later date. I was told that I would need to contact my GP to arrange an appointment to have my stitches removed. I did so but the nurse was on holiday for the next two weeks and there was no cover provided. Then, randomly, I received a phone call from rph inviting me to make an appointment for stitch removal. I told them 'Tell me when you want me to pop in and I'll be there'. An appointment was made for the following Monday (it was Wednesday). Upon arrival at the fracture clinic on the Monday, the nurses asked me why I was there because 'you can't have your stitches removed until 10-14 days after they were done'. I informed them that rph specifically told me to come on this day! Exasperated, I asked to speak to an ortho surgeon about my collarbone (it was starting to heal but not in the right position). I'm still waiting. What is going on?

  9. Review titled Comments not complaints

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Robert Parkinson - Posted on 08 July 2022

Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of undertaking reviews as a lay member on inspections teams at both Preston and Chorley Hospital. Recently I was an inpatient at Seller Ward, Chorley. All staff from Consultants to Cleaners were courteous, kind, considerate and helpful. My treatment was exemplary but there a few issues I would like to point out. 1. I was requested to attend at 7.30a.m. Not a major problem though I am used to getting up later. My administration requirements and preop tests were completed by 9.30 and my requirements for lunch and dinner were recorded, however, due to some mix up I was not taken to surgery until 4p.m. and returned at 6.p.m. I missed both meals. A nursing assistant kindly made me toast and gave me sandwiches and biscuits with a small cup of tea but I really needed a meal. As a suggestion would it be possible to supply a microwave and a small selection of frozen meals so that a proper meal could have easily been made available? I am not a fan of processed food but I feel it a more than reasonable alternative – I have always found the meals supplied excellent when undertaking reviews. 2. There were three toilets available, all clean, tidy and in good order except all three suffered from slightly slimy, dirty toilet bowls at the front under the lip or at the front waterspout! Easily missed but also easily rectified. 3. I was theoretically fit to leave straight after breakfast but due to delays in the pharmacy I was not discharged until about 2.30p.m. Would it be possible to just offer the alternative of a prescription that could be filled at a local chemists to relieve pressure on the understaffed system? 4. During the morning of my discharge, I found I needed a catheter and having used one previously requested I be issued self-administered catheters, the consultant was most helpful and arranged it swiftly, my only comment is that the SpeediCath catheters provided were considerably less comfortable to use that the Manfred Sauer Catheters that have a soft end making scratching the urethra less likely.

  10. Review titled Amazing Midwives

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Martin - Posted on 27 April 2022

We were recently in the delivery suites at the Sharoe Green unit preston. I cannot thank everyone who helped us enough. Special mention to the midwife who was on the night shift with us and spent the majority of labour with us. She is a huge credit to the midwife team and I would like to thank her personally for making our stay all the more comfortable when things didn't go as smooth as planned. From the moment she arrived she was so professional and helped to relax us all night whilst taking 1st class care of my partner. I hope she gets the recognition she deserves as our experience was made so much better with her help and comfort during our time in the hospital and words can't thank her enough. Credit to all other staff members who helped us whilst recovering on the ward whilst dealing with what is a very busy maternity ward! I love the NHS and there are some wonderful people in this department.
