  1. Review titled Incredibly rude, sarcastic and insensitive receptionist!

Rated 3 stars out of 5

My son was given a scheduled GP appointment at the Lewes Victoria Hospital. He was very anxious and embarrassed about his complaint, which was testicle-related. On arrival, the hospital appeared to be closed (it was 6.30pm on Easter Monday, 1st April 2024) so we pressed the buzzer on the door to the emergency surgery. There was no answer, so we waited a while and then tried the buzzer again. Still nothing. After a few minutes we tried again and a very angry-sounding voice came through the intercom telling us the door was open. I apologised for the confusion immediately upon entering and rather than accepting my apology, the receptionist said very sarcastically 'yes, that is a door, and yes, doors do generally open'. It's not clear why she didn't just use the intercom to tell me the door was unlocked when I buzzed the first time. I then left my son to check in. There was a crowded waiting room all well within earshot. She asked him his name and what he was there for, and despite him confirming his name and the fact that he had a scheduled appointment, she then asked the nature of his health problem, which meant he had to explain this in front of around a dozen people. This was clearly unnecessary as we had provided the nature of his complaint when booking the appointment via the GP. He had to explain that he thought he had a varicocele, but she didn't know what that was so she then made him spell it out to the crowded room. She then continued to quiz him, asking him how long he'd had it ('6 months') to which she then asked him why he was only coming in now about it. Needless to say, this was very distressing and humiliating for my son, who was already anxious, upset and very nervous having never been to a medical appointment like this before. He then also made a minor error on his signing-in form, accidentally confusing the date that day with his date of birth, to which she then made another very sarcastic comment. By this point he was on the brink of just walking out, he was so humiliated. Surely the primary role of reception staff in this sort of situation is to put anxious, distressed patients at ease. This receptionist did the exact opposite of this and seemed to take real pleasure in humiliating him in front of a room full of people. We'd like her to understand how upsetting this was for him, in the hope that she might be more sensitive towards other patients in the future.

I had a gynae procedure yesterday and was in for the day. The care, kindness and support from the nurses, theatre team, and my fantastic doctor was exceptional. Everything was explained to me through the procedure and throughout the day. I left feeling so cared for. Thank you so much.

I was seen quickly and well looked after. I felt supported and the advice I was given by the nurse practitioner was very good. The receptionist helped me get a taxi to A&E when that proved necessary.

  4. Review titled UTI symptom response very disappointing.

Rated 1 star out of 5

Completed a 111 on line late Christmas Day and was advised to go to UTC as had symptoms of a UTI…that included burning during urination, blood in urine, lower abdominal pain, shivers…26th went to UTC and received a friendly and professional welcome from receptionist and triage nurse and all looking positive for intervention or so I thought. However, UTC Dr advised me it was possibly an appendicitis evolving, no infection, and the burning during urination could be anxiety. I did question him on the evidence of a UTI as I had one previously, to which he was adamant that despite blood in my urine sample and the other symptoms they could all result from other causes such as anxiety. His advice was A and E if pain in abdomen got worse and drink lots of water, take gaviscon if I had acid reflux ( I had happened to mention I was subject to current investigation of atrial fibrillation and acid reflux had been a co existing problem since it started which had dramatically changed my diet and lifestyle hence his initial suggestions of no alcohol and drinking more water etc was not relevant to my symptoms) At no point had I wanted any input other than re UTI symptoms and I left the appointment knowing that I was no further fwd other than the knowledge that accessing AandE was my only option for treatment. Thankfully I received a swift intervention from my GP practise at saltdean and rottingdean surgery the day after where I was prescribed antibiotics for a UTI..a UTI I had had since Xmas day, that was evident to 111 on line, my surgery and myself when I sought intervention from UTC. I accept Drs don’t always get everything right and this Dr said those very words to me upon my departure…but I am confused as to why this presentation was not detected and then treated during the UTC appointment?

  5. Review titled Very helpful

Not being able to get a Doctor’s appointment, for help with continual pain, I was very grateful for the walk-in clinic. Although they could not directly help me, their Dr. sent a referral to my GP for the necessity of seeing me urgently. Then on my going directly to my surgery, I now have an appointment. Thank you so much.
