  1. Review titled Over-promised and under-delivered

Rated 1 star out of 5

4 months on since I self referred and I am left feeling worse and with no clear care pathway ahead of me. I was told that case management by an ‘elite clinician’ was a possibility during triage in January. After 2 months wait I saw a senior clinician for 90 min assessment. We discussed my preferred treatment options and I was left believing that my drug treatment would be initiated by this PHP clinician. I also asked for psychological treatment options and was told this would be ‘discussed with MDT’. I also asked for help with obtaining sick note. None of which has materialized. At follow up two weeks later I was told that PHP did not prescribe the medication that was discussed (why was I not told this sooner, it was very upsetting). The ‘MDT’ decided that further assessment was needed for psychological treatment. However, my clinician was not well informed about the treatment options on offer and came across as not empowered to make their own clinical recommendations. I did not feel that the clinician established a therapeutic alliance with me or fostered it in any way. I asked for some time to think about whether or not I would engage in further assessment with this clinician, mainly because the first assessment session really churned things up for me - talking about many difficult issues for 90 minutes - and then not delivered any practical help, support or treatment option that I would find acceptable or useful. I felt not listened to and misled. The clinician kept referring to ‘the MDT’ and ‘the management’ making the decisions about what treatment may be made available to me. It was a bit surreal to be honest, as I am an experienced senior clinician myself. The only treatment option that was on offer from the clinician could have been prescribed by my GP months ago! I did not want it due to side effects and also because I already had similar treatments with no success. The whole process was a painful and exhausting waste of time. I’d advise you to try and engage with your own GPs or, if thst does not work seek help privately. Do not waste your time with PHP. Something not quite right with the service model, the culture and the resources.

I am extremely grateful for all the excellent support I have received from my CBT therapist with really helpful ideas and compassion in supporting me through my grief journey. Thank you very much for getting me to a much better place through your hard work with me. I am also extremely grateful to my Practitioner Health GP who continues to support me through my very difficult journey, the worst time in my life including listening and supporting me, believing me when I thought I was experiencing medication side effects and continuing to diligently following me up. Always so kind and helpful. Thank you so very much.

The support I have received from Practitioner Health, both from my GP and a course of CBT, has been fantastic, and fundamental to my being able to return to full-time work after 8 months off of work with Long Covid. This is an essential and compassionate service for medical professionals; thank you for your support.

I never imagined how much I better I would feel after receiving support from practitioner health. After self referring I had a prompt initial psychiatrist assessment followed by being allocated a wonderful therapist who seemed to really understand the issues I was facing. The whole process has been seamless and I have already recommended to several colleagues.
