metric.Description ONS publish annual data on avoidable mortality, including preventable mortality, at a national level Obesity is a priority area for Government. The Government's "Call to Action" on obesity (published Oct 2011) included national ambitions relating to excess weight in adults, which is recognised as a major determinant of premature mortality and avoidable ill health. National and local authority level figures are published on a rolling twelve month basis every quarter Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality accounting for 6% of deaths globally. People who have a physically active lifestyle have a 20-35% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and stroke compared to those who have a sedentary lifestyle. Regular physical activity is also associated with a reduced risk of diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis and colon/breast cancer and with improved mental health. In older adults physical activity is associated with increased functional capacities. The estimated direct cost of physical inactivity to the NHS across the UK is over £1.6 billion per year. Alcohol consumption is a contributing factor to hospital admissions and deaths from a diverse range of conditions. Alcohol misuse is estimated to cost the NHS about £3.5 billion per year and society as a whole £21 billion annually. Early Years Foundation Stage Profile attainment data and Phonics screening check data is published by the Department for Education annually Falls are the largest cause of emergency hospital admissions for older people, and significantly impact on long term outcomes, e.g. being a major precipitant of people moving from their own home to long-term nursing or residential care.
