Overview

Welcome to the Red and Green Practice at Blackfield Health Centre. We are a family GP practice with a mix of male and female doctors and excellent nursing, secretarial and support teams and a highly engaged Patient Participation Group.

We are open until 8pm two nights a week (Tuesday and Thursday) and run GP and nurse clinics until late. You can also pick up or collect prescriptions.

Our Urgent Care Clinic allows same day access to a GP and nurse team who can advise and treat you on the same day you call, if urgent. We are improving routine appointments by working with patients to encourage seeing the same GP each time you call. Reception may ask you to help them by indicating why you need an appointment – they are not being nosey, they are just trying to help get you the best appointment. You don’t need to tell them, if you don’t want to.

We have introduced free health checks and medication reviews to all new patients registering after March 2013 and we are pleased to answer any questions about how to join our family friendly practice.

Dr Margaret Whitby

It's with a sad heart I have to let you know Dr Margaret Whitby passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Sunday 7 April 2013. Only 53, the breast cancer diagnosed less than 12 months ago was very aggressive. This is a great loss to Blackfield and Waterside Health Centers and Dr Whitby will be sadly missed by colleagues and patients alike. The funeral will be on Friday 19 April at Southampton Crematorium and a book of condolences is open at Blackfield Health Centre. We ask for your understanding on that Friday afternoon as many GPs and staff will be attending the memorial service. Our thanks to all who have left messages of support, they are very much appreciated. Thank you from all the doctors and staff.

Patient Group Report 2012/13

Once again, we are very pleased to have worked closely with our Patient Group to make improvements to our service. After working together to improve access to appointments in 2011/12, this year we focussed on improving continuity of care (seeing the same GP each time you visit). A full report is available on the practice website www.redandgreenpractice.co.uk/ and here.

Retirement of Dr Gregory

As many of you will know, Dr Gregory has recently retired from the practice.  You will probably be aware of the difficulties in recruitment in General Practice at present.  This has meant that we will be sharing Dr Gregory’s patients between the existing team.

We would like to assure patients that we will be allocating them a new named general practitioner within the next few weeks.  We have been able to place over two thirds of Dr Gregory’s patients with a GP they have seen recently.  Our team are moving these patients on the computer system as quickly as possible.  You will see this change on your repeat prescriptions, or via PatientAccess or reception can check for you.

You will hopefully understand that some doctors, especially those who have been here longer may have oversubscribed lists, and it has therefore not always been possible to place patients with the doctor of their choice.

Whilst you are still able to book with whichever GP you choose (subject to availability of appointments), we encourage you to see your new ‘Usual GP’ when you next need the practice for a routine appointment.

If you still feel strongly that you would like to change doctors, please put your request in writing.  We will then be able to pass your request to the GP to see if they have sufficient space on their list to allow you to transfer.

Named GP

All patients of the Red and Green practice have a named, accountable GP, we call this your Usual GP. Your Usual GP is responsible for your overall care. The aim of this is to be proactive in maintaining your health and well-being, providing continuity of care. When booking a routine doctor appointment or telephone consultation for an ongoing matter, the reception team will offer you an appointment with your Usual GP whenever possible. If you are asked to provide details of your GP when completing forms or when attending hospital etc. please give them your usual GP’s name.

If you are not aware who your Usual GP is please look on your prescription counterfoil or ask when booking your next appointment. Alternatively please contact the surgery.
