Early learning and development

90% of your child's brain growth happens before the age of 5. Right from the start, all those little moments you spend together are building their brain.

Every smile, cuddle, chat and game makes a huge difference, helping them learn to communicate, develop confidence and make friends.

Find lots of ideas, easy tips and activities you can do together with your child.

Starting Reception with confidence

The first day of school is a big moment for your child. The everyday routines and playful activities they enjoy at home, and in childcare settings, can help them get school ready.

The Starting Reception website lists the key skills they'll need, such as sharing toys and using cutlery, and fun ways to practise them together.

You can also find advice if your child has, or you think they may have, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Did you know?

In the first 5 years of your child's life their brain develops faster than at any other time. Make the most of every moment by making eye contact, chatting and engaging with what they're interested in.

Childcare support for your family

As well as the important things parents do at home, childcare can help give your child a great start, whilst helping you juggle family life. That’s why childcare support is expanding.

Visit the Childcare Choices website to use the eligibility checker and see what support you could get. You'll also find helpful information about how each offer works and how to apply.
