  1. Review titled Blood test

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 21 September 2023

Made an appointment for blood test which was easy to do. The staff were friendly and i was called in on time. My blood was taken and a piece of cotton wool taped on to my arm with out checking that I was not bleeding. When l got home my arm was still bleeding and I had blood on my clothes. After I had my blood taken I felt that I was rushed out and not allowed to elevate my arm to allow the blood to stop. I also had a big bruise that is still on my arm nearly a week after I had it done

Thank you for your comments. It is not standard process to elevate your arm after blood is taken and bruising in a common side effect from blood tests. We will share this feedback with our staff and take learning from your experience.

I found the surgery easy to find. I was impressed how clean and tidy the environment was.The staff were very efficient with no long waiting times. Having had recent knee surgery I was pleased to find high enough seating to accommodate me. Altogether a pleasant experience.

  3. Review titled Immunisation updated and ‘well man’ checkip

Rated 5 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 07 August 2023

I’m a new patient and this was my first visit to the surgery. Previous to this visit I had been impressed by the communication (SMS) from surgery which had promoted me to book the above two visits. Without these SMS I would not have been aware that I needed a refresh of tetanus/MMR or that I was entitled to a ‘well man’ checkup. The ‘well man’ tests have also highlighted some issues that were unknown and are now being followed up. Thank you. The surgery was clean, there were was adequate cycle parking, the receptionist was friendly and helpful (the automatic check-in did not work -). There was plenty of seating. I found the living healthy tips being played in the TV a little patronising/Orwellian and others seemed not to pay attention to it. I wonder how strong the evidence base is for its efficacy. The environment was a little sterile - some foliage would be calming and improve air quality. The nurse who gave the injections was super friendly, provided clear information and took account of me being a bit fainty. My later appointment for the ‘well man’ completed by a AHP was through, friendly and answered my questions. There was clear signposting to the NHS app to check for test results and the surgery’s SMS let me know what to do next. The experience overall has been a significant step up my previous GPs.

Rated 5 stars out of 5

The nurses who treated me were extremely thorough and talked me through the treatment including a Doppler test as well as dressing a leg ulcer. Also talked to me about future treatment.

  6. Review titled Difficulty making an appointment

Rated 2 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 04 August 2023

I found the whole process of making an appointment extremely stressful as I was very worried about my condition. When I called the surgery, urgent appointments were fully booked, and the receptionist couldn't simply book me in for the next available opening, and I was told to phone back the next day. When I went into the surgery to try to speak to someone face-to-face, the receptionist didn't even approach the desk, but waved me away and told me to 'persevere' with phoning. On the following day when I still couldn't get an urgent appointment, I was advised to make an e-consultation, but that too was over subscribed and I had to make three attempts on three different days before I was able to get through. When I finally got an appointment and visited Somerstown Surgery, the waiting room was EMPTY. The system is infuriating and completely dehumanising.

Please be aware that if you consider your medical need 'urgent' that we recommend you call as close to 8.00am as possible. We are an appointment led service and so we do have finite capacity, however the lines are generally open for a good length of time (it can vary daily) before closing so we would stress the need to call early. It is worth visiting our appointments resource page for further guidance; https://www.portsdowngrouppractice.co.uk/clinics-and-services/appointments-tests-referrals/appointments-with-the-doctors/ Waiting rooms are no indicator of work going on at the surgery or indeed any surgery in the UK. Since the pandemic, telephone consultations have increased across the board. There is a lot of telephone / digital work that allows us to increase capacity and do 'more' with the resource we have.

  9. Review titled Digital Exculsion

Rated 1 star out of 5

I have had a few texts from this practice. They contain important links but I cannot follow these links as I do not have a smart phone. Along with over 4 million fellow Brits. A perfect exmple of digital exclusion.

  10. Review titled Digital exclusion continued

Rated 1 star out of 5

by Colin Costello - Posted on 24 November 2022

So I was told to go online at about 19.00 to book an appointment on line. Except I do not have intenet access in my flat. So what am I meant to do? I looked at the website earlier in order to familarise myself and just ended up totally confused. It is not clear to me how to book a phone chat with my doctor. So many of the remaining slots seemed to be about Flu jabs or Bloods. Whatever that is. I could not find one which allowed me to consult with my doctor. The nightmare continues .

Thank you for your feedback. As you do not have internet access and need assistance with familiarising yourself with our website and processes and procedures, with your permission I would like to arrange for someone within our admin team to contact you and arrange for some assistance but would need your consent to arrange this, or you can attend your most convenient surgery and ask for assistance.
