The Urology service is based primarily at Castle Hill Hospital in a purpose built unit. The unit houses a centralised urology service linking a 30 bed ward (ward 15) with a day procedures area. The Department also accesses a number of fast turnover beds on the 5 day surgical ward (ward 12).

The day procedures area comprises of a cystoscopy suite, lithotripsy area, recovery and 2 consultation rooms. A number of specialist clinics are undertaken from this area including diagnostic and check cystoscopy lists, lithotripsy, urodynamics, video-urodynamics, continence clinics, stoma clinics, bladder instillation treatments, TWOC clinics and pre-admission clinics.

Additional Outpatient facilities are provided at the Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital sites and Day Surgery Urology sessions are also provided from a purpose built, stand alone Day Surgery unit at Castle Hill Hospital  

There are five Consultant Urologists, Mr John Hetherington, Mr David Cooksey, Mr Graham Almond, Mr Matthew Simms and Mr Sigurd Kraus.  They work closely as a team with each consultant having a special interest.        

The Department is supported by a strong and dynamic Nurse Practitioner team, consisting of five nurses, who take a lead in Prostate assessment, Haematuria assessment (blood in the urine), Urodynamics, Incontinence treatment, Stoma management and bladder installation chemotherapy.

The Department has also recently introduced a new prostate cancer pathway which incorporates a one-stop TRUS biopsy clinic and nurse led follow up clinics.

Elective urology services are run 5 days a week and an emergency service is also provided from ward 15.  An on-call service is also available for specialist knowledge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
