Overview

The Great Western Hospital is a modern hospital providing emergency care, surgery, diagnostics, paediatrics, maternity, outpatient and day case services.

The hospital opened in December 2002, replacing the Princess Margaret Hospital in Old Town, Swindon. The GWH is superbly designed and equipped and offers a first class environment for patients, visitors and staff, with over 30% of our beds provided in single rooms with en-suite facilities, helping maintain patients’ privacy and dignity whilst under our care.

The GWH offers a range of services and facilities from a busy Emergency Department, a dynamic Radiology department and a high performing Maternity unit which includes a co-located Birth Centre.

Safety is a top priority for us and we pride ourselves in having very tough infection control procedures in place. In fact, over the past five years the number of cases of MRSA have fallen by 75% - in 2010/11 there were just three MRSA Bacteraemia cases at Great Western Hospital.

Recent Developments

- A new Midwife-led Birth Centre providing mums-to-be with more personalised care in a home from home setting

 - A new Cardiac Catheter Laboratory (along with refurbishing the existing lab) which means we can treat people more quickly with the latest technology

-Redevelopment of the Wiltshire Breast Centre providing the latest equipment to improve the diagnosis of breast cancer and increase the number of women routinely screened for the disease

- Staff Satisfaction – We are in the top five Trusts in the South West in the 2011 NHS Staff Survey result. See the results on the CQC website.
