Confidentiality and Medical Records

Safeguarding the information we hold about our patients is of the utmost importance to us. We strictly restrict who has access to it. We work as a team in the Practice, so all those involved in patient care at the Practice will have access to the records, including the administration staff who keep these up to date. We are currently part of the national Summary Care Record scheme which aims to have one central record which is accessible to professionals caring for patients outside of the Practice. All patients have the absolute right not to be included in this scheme simply by signing an opt-out form. When we refer to other medical services they also have access to this information - this is increasingly being done electronically, but they too guarantee the same safeguards. Disclosure to others such as employers, solicitors or insurance companies requires written consent from the patient. The provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998 still apply.

From time to time we may use an external organisation to assist us with mailing out our general letters of invitation for some healthcare services we provide for patients, such as flu clinics.  Patients may have total assurance that the organisation we use conforms to all the same levels of confidentiality as the Practice. We have a legally binding data protection and confidentiality agreement in place with the company.

If you have any concerns or objections to receiving basic recall letters in this way please let us know and we will ensure that we mark your record accordingly

The Cornwall Road Practice is one of the few approved sites for Research in Dorset. At times research may be going on in the Practice; this is usually to answer questions about which treatments works best. Full ethical approval is always sought according to NHS guidelines. Patients will never be involved without their consent and being fully informed. Records will not be released to any researchers without such consent. The patient is absolutlely free not to agree to participate and the care they receive will not be different because of this.

Training at the Practice

We enjoy training new general practitioners, medical students and nursing students. These staff spend time working at the surgery as part of a formal training process. they are fully supervised and often already hold health care qualifications. For example, a GP Registrar will have been fully qualified as a doctor for at least 2 years before undertaking this post.
