Stepping Hill Hospital confirmed as having lowest death rates in Greater Manchester

Stepping Hill Hospital has been confirmed as having the lowest death rates in Greater Manchester.

A national report from the Health and Social Care Information Centre ranks the Stockport hospital as the best in the county for low mortality rates.

The score is known as the Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) and compares the expected number of deaths  with the actual number recorded within 30 days of the patients' discharge. The rating takes into account factors including diagnosis, age and sex.

Stepping Hill Hospital has an indicator of 91, which is approximately 9 points better than the national baseline average of 100.

The hospital sees around 500,000 patients a year and has a national reputation for its urology and bowel cancer surgery. It runs a specialist stroke unit for patients across south Manchester and one of the largest orthopaedic surgery departments in the country.

Ann Barnes, Chief Executive of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust which runs Stepping Hill Hospital said; “It is important for people to have confidence when they come into hospital and to know that they are coming somewhere that is safe. We are very pleased that this report confirms we have lower than average mortality rates and will always work hard to provide the highest quality care.”

The SHMI indicator is produced by the Health and Social Care Information Centre. For more information see www.hscic.gov.uk/SHMI

The score was calculated between April 2013 and March 2014.

Stepping Hill Hospital ranked as one of the best hospitals in the country

Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport

Stepping Hill Hospital has been ranked as one of the best hospitals in the country for providing high-quality and safe care under a new rating system.

The new rating system has been introduced nationally by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the body responsible for checking that all hospitals in England and Wales meet national standards. It is based on a new intelligent monitoring tool that looks at a range of information including patient experience and statistical measures of performance.

The monitoring tool, with 150 indicators, has six bands - with band one the worst and band six the best.
