May 2014 Safe Staffing Levels

Staffing Levels

We welcome the publication of information about staffing levels on our inpatient wards. Staffing levels are one of the factors that affect the care that patients receive, and the more information we provide and the more knowledge and understanding patients and families have the better.

Figures for all inpatient areas for the Trust’s hospitals in May show that we expected to our registered and unregistered nurses to work 202,949 hours the month. The actual number of hours they worked was 212,072, - 9,123 more than expected.

We will continuously monitor staffing and share this information widely. We take ongoing steps to ensure that staffing levels and skill mix are sufficient and take account of unexpected staff absences or particularly busy times on our wards.
