Overview

Our philosophy is to support, maintain and encourage the independence of older people with mental illness and the challenges it presents.  The multi-disciplinary team comprises a wide range of professionals.  We work in close partnership with other organisations, such as The Alzheimer's Society and Age UK.  Inpatient mental health care at Alderney Hospital is provided across two wards, offering differing designs of care in line with the individual needs of older people, and fully meets the Department of Health standards and requirements for delivering same-sex accommodation:

  • Herm (female assessment/treatment) - includes five-bedded Intensive Therapy Unit
  • St Brelades (male assessment/treatment)

Haymoor Day Hospital provides multidisciplinary assessment, treatment and monitoring for older people suffering from organic and functional illness  and enables patients to remain in the community wherever possible.

The Poole Older People's Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) is also based at the hospital.

The Lodge at Alderney Hosptial has become the new Dementia Resource Centre for The Alzheimer's Society.  It is open daily from 1030 - 1430 and at other times by appointment.

Also at Alderney Hospital are Jersey & Guernsey Wards, a 48 bedded unit that provides in-patient care predominately for elderly people that require rehabilitation (physical services).  Patients are usually transferred from either Poole or Bournemouth Hospital following an acute episode; this could be due to a medical or surgical condition.   The wards have a Matron and Senior Sisters to ensure that  patients receive a high standard of nursing care.  Patients are expected to participate in their rehabilitation programme with the aim to be discharged to their preferred destination place.   Physiotherapists and Occupational therapists will also work with you as part of your rehabilitation.  The wards also have a doctor who works Monday to Friday and patients see their consultant once a week.
