BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION THE ROAD AHEAD: YOUR GUIDETO ECG (ELECTROCARDIOGRAM) This film will show you what to expectif you are having an electrocardiogram, often called an ECG. My name is Manzoor Sheikh.I live in Tooting. - My age is 50 years.- FATHER Two weeks ago, I had pain on my chest and my oncologist suggestedI go for an ECG because I have history ofhigh cholesterol. My name is Tracy Carney. I'm a cardiographer and I work atSt George's Hospital in Tooting. I'm not nervousbecause I'm very comfortable now. But I know if I haveany kind of heart problems, I need to knowbefore I have any trouble. An ECG takes a trace of the rhythmand rate of a patient's heartbeat. The ECG is pain-freeand it takes approximately five minutes. We then ask them to take offthe top half of their clothes and lay on the couch nice and relaxed. When the patient is on the couch, we attach electrodes tothe chest area, ankles and wrists. Then we attach the ECG leadsto the electrodes. It's very important the patientlies still whilst doing the ECG so we can get an accurate recording. OK, that's your ECG all done. I'll give you your ECGso you can take back for your doctor. (Manzoor) Yes, it's a comfortable test. No problem. And she done everythingvery brightly and very nicely. (narrator) Heart disease is stillthe single biggest killer in the UK.
