Abdominal aortic aneurysm: open surgery animation
Open surgery is the traditional method
of repairing an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Under general anaesthetic,
the surgeon makes a cut into the abdomen to reach the aorta.
The aorta is opened
and then a piece of fabric called a graft
is sutured inside the aneurysm to replace it
so that blood is conducted through the graft instead of the aneurysm.
The aneurysm sac is then closed back over the graft
before the surgeon stitches together the cut made in the abdomen.
