Urology is the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra and male reproductive organs.

Southend University Hospital are now able to offer pioneering surgery, including reconstructive bladder operations (avoiding the need for a stoma); bladder augmentation for patients with overactive bladders, plus other state-of-the-art surgical procedures for urinary and faecal incontinence.

We are a cancer centre for urology and have a specialist urology ward at our main hospital site for patients recovering from major surgery. Our dedicated outpatient department includes facilities for urodynamics, TRUS biopsies and diagnostic ultrasound.

We provide a ‘one-stop’ assessment clinic for patients with urological conditions, which allows investigations to be performed in one half-day session, allowing quicker and complete diagnosis.

Our haematuria ‘one-stop’ is a single-visit service. Patients who complete a MSU (mid-stream urine sample to detect infection) and urine cytology (a test used to detect cancer of the urinary tract system) when referred by their GP, then come to us. We are then able to complete a history, exam, ultrasound scan and flexi-cystoscopy (telescope examination of the bladder) in one appointment at our clinic.

We also offer a rapid access clinic for suspected cancer; an erectile dysfunction clinic; a full range of diagnostic and exploratory tests; and cutting-edge treatment of prostate cancer.

Our urology department runs from our main site at Prittlewell Chase with many clinics in the community and an extended service at Brentwood Community Hospital
