Inpatient services provide treatment and care for people aged 18-65 who have severe mental illness, and who need their care to be delivered in an inpatient setting.
Acute Inpatient services may be provided to you if you are aged 18-65 and are experiencing a crisis as a result of severe mental health problems and cannot be adequately supported in your home or community. You may be admitted with your consent (this is called an ‘informal’ admission) or, if you are particularly unwell you may be admitted under a section of the Mental Health Act (this is known as a ‘formal’ admission).
If you are detained under the Mental Health Act and unable to be managed safely within the acute admission unit then you may be detained in the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The PICU provides treatment on a specialist environment for people who require an enhanced level of care, in a secure environment, for a short period of time.
