Things you should know
Gynaecology diagnoses and treats conditions in relation to the female reproductive system. This can include the uterus, cervix vagina, urinary tract and aspects including contracteption and sexually transmitted diseases.
Gynaecology is split into the areas of reproductive medicine, family planning and gynaecological oncology (cancer) and urology (Urinery problems). The Gynaecology service prides itself on the women focused service it provides, offering fast, open access to diagnostic and treatment facilities. We have a dedicated Gynaecology team who offer high quality patient care through the wide range of both outpatient and inpatient services.
Our move into a purpose built Women’s and Newborns Centre on the Burnley General Hospital site has given us the opportunity to consolidate and strengthen some of the pathways of care and deliver savings from economies of scale. Refinement of clinical skills and application of emerging advances in techniques have enabled us to reduce the in-patient gynaecology bed base by shifting care into out-patient and day case settings, with good outcomes and patient reported satisfaction levels. The newly opened Blackburn Birth Centre has attracted substantial interest from women across East Lancashire, beyond our expectations based on research from other birth centres.
