Travelling independently; another string to Alisdair’s bow

Al stood outside, wearing black top and brown jacket. Trees and path in background.

Hi, I’m Al and I’m 36. I came to college in 2000 and have stayed with Henshaws ever since. I’ve learnt so much since I’ve been with Henshaws, but I’m really excited to tell you one of the biggest achievements I’ve made recently – travelling on my own all the way from Harrogate to Scotland and back again!

Because I’m registered severely sight impaired, I asked Henshaws Disability Support Service (DSS) to help me plan to achieve my biggest challenge so far. I really wanted to visit my family in Arbroath, without them having to come down to escort me. The journey is more than 5 hours, and I knew I’d have to change trains too. Nic (a rehabilitation officer in the DSS team) is brilliant.  She helped me plan everything out. It wouldn’t have been possible before, and I’m so glad that I’ve done the travel training. I enjoyed doing it too. It’s helped my independence and is another string to my bow!

"All our family so enjoy visiting Richard when we experience the friendly caring enviroment at Church Avenue"

Richard

We recently had a lovely email from the family of an individual who lives at Church Avenue which we'd like to share with you.

"We would like to offer our sincere gratitude to you and everyone at Henshaws following my brother Richard's move to your Church Avenue House.

The transition period was excellent, Richard now states he feels totally 'at home'.

We have seen a marked improvement in Richard's well being, personal hygiene, grooming and most importantly his life skills are improving on an almost weekly basis.

This is no doubt as result of the care and proffesionalism everyone at Henshaws has shown towards Richard.

All our family so enjoy visiting Richard when we experience the friendly caring enviroment at Church Avenue.

Can I again offer our thanks and gratitude to you and everyone at Henshaws."

Holidays!

As part of our commitment to support people using our service in their leisure and social activities, we have recently taken a holiday with full staff support. We started off by exploring Beamish (a living museum in the North East), then headed to Flamingo Land theme park for thrilling rides and more gentle parts for the less adventurous, and finished with a trip to York to explore the history of the famous city. We have previously spent many holidays abroad in Brittany, at a centre which provides a full programme of activities; a place we love and have visited on many occasions.
