The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation TrustWe are an NHS mental health service for outpatients. You will not be charged for our services. We are one of the main centres in the NHS for teaching and research in psychological therapies and mental health. We are also a consultancy service and help organisations in the private, public and voluntary sectors.

The Trust has four clinical departments: the Child and Family Department, the Adolescent and Young Adults Service, the Adult Department and the Portman Clinic.

You can find out more information on the work that each department does in their leaflets or by visiting our website at www.tavistockandportman.uk

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Department

We see children on their own, with their families or in groups. We try to help families look for new ways of getting on and talking to each other.

Just relax cause your therapist ain’t gonna hurt you if you tell them the truth and whatever you say will stay in your therapist room.” - a former CAMHS patient

The Adolescent and Young Adults Service

We offer a range of mental health services to young people who are facing emotional or behavioural difficulties within their families or at school.

I remember I was kind of very desperate just to speak to anyone. I felt kind of relieved like I had this kind of ticking time bomb where I had to get at somebody so they kind of like diffused it.” - a former Adolescent and Young Adults Service patient

The Adult Department

We provide adults with a safe place to talk about their emotional or psychological difficulties and to explore how these experiences link up with the rest of their everyday life.

I was very unsure about going into group therapy, but was persuaded by the therapist saying that this was worth considering and it is surprising how successful it can be. So I went and thanks to her skill and the interaction with the group I can say it worked for me.” - a former Adult Department patient

The Portman Clinic

We offer help to people who suffer with criminal, violent or sexual behaviour. We provide the space for people to discuss their problems and work together to see how they may be helped.

Department of Education and Training

Do you have an interest in mental health training? We have a worldwide reputation for providing specialist mental health training for the public and voluntary sectors. We teach around 2,000 part time postgraduate students every year on more than 40 long courses.

We deliver the majority of our services at the Tavistock Centre, 120 Belsize Lane, London NW3 5BA. We also deliver services at the Portman Clinic, a service which offers specialised long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic help to people who suffer from problems arising from delinquent, criminal or violent behaviour or from disturbing and damaging sexual behaviours or experiences.

Our other sites include our Gloucester House Day Unit, a specialist day unit for children with complex behavioural needs; GP practices across City & Hackney as part of our primary care psychotherapy consultation service (PCPCS); GP practices and community locations across Camden; a young people’s drug and alcohol service in Barnet (Barnet YPDAS), and a family drug and alcohol court (FDAC) in central London and across other sites in the UK.
