Volume of operations

What this data shows:

The number of operations indicates the volume of procedures that have been undertaken. In some situations larger volumes may be associated with better outcomes.

How the data is gathered:

There is more detailed information on the breakdown of operations and operation types available on http://www.scts.org/patients/hospitals/

When the data is shown:

The number of operations given indicates how many of the procedures each surgeon has undertaken. Volumes may be lower for surgeons who have other aspects of their practices, such as management, research or thoracic surgery.

More information about the data source:

The data is collected from each of the hospitals and submitted to the National Institute for Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR) for analysis. The data used to determine risk of patients is validated with the hospitals and surgeons who submit the data. All data has gone through rigorous validation and each hospital has provided written assurance that there is no reason not to publish.
