Lose the belly
Doctors consider your waist measurement the most reliable guide to your health.
Certain types of food, especially foods that are high in fat,
high in sugar as well,
fast food has those combinations.
(man) The doctor said something about how selfish I was
because I was the person who would get her out of bed at 2am
when I had a heart attack.
That was certainly one of the triggers as far as I was concerned.
That and the photograph that was taken of me when we were on holiday,
and I looked very much like a barrel with legs.
Not a pretty sight.
It was Big Macs, two or three Big Macs.
One time we had an eating competition
and I had two kebabs, about four Big Macs
and a bottle and a half of Coke.
Yeah, and I wasn't full.
Like most men you put most of your weight on the stomach,
and my stomach was out here.
My biggest problem was I was snacking. Always.
I would snack throughout the day.
Particularly bad would be bacon rolls in the morning.
And it would also be sausage rolls.
Well, I was a 62-inch waist
and in chest size I was about 60, 62 inches as well.
If I was drinking, I would drink maybe only twice a week,
but when I did drink I would drink a lot.
And so therefore there was never really any chance of me losing weight.
Less drinking, definitely less drinking.
Obviously we all like to have a drink, but less of a binge-style drinking,
maybe just a moderate amount.
Alcohol is certainly the biggest impact on my waist.
Nothing quite like three pints of Guinness instead of a meal, is there?
I cut down all my drinking.
I don't drink any more. Not even a pint.
And also I cut down on Cokes. No Cokes.
That's it. It has to come down.
It's too big at the moment.
I have got to get the weight down. 100 per cent.
Got some tips?
The three things I'd suggest would be cut down on drinking,
less fast food and more exercise.
What I find now is instead of snacking on KitKats or sausage rolls,
I snack throughout the day on things like tomatoes or apples.
One thing I found was if you go into a restaurant,
if you want your vegetables without butter on them,
if you want your salad with the dressing on the side,
if you want your pasta with the sauce on the side,
they'll normally do it for you.
They just have to be asked.
I remember going out on dates with girls
and going to a restaurant and eating twice as much food as they did.
You'd be full up and the pudding would come and I'd eat it.
It's embarrassing. Food everywhere. Embarrassing.
A lot of people see me for different reasons,
but one of the main reasons is to lose weight.
I would encourage a cardiovascular programme
on top of a conditioning programme.
Lifestyle as well obviously plays a really important part.
I'm at a gym four or five times a week.
I do Pilates for flexibility, because I'm quite big.
Then three days it's cardio,
so it's running, it's skipping, it's rowing.
Pure cardio. The other two days I do weights.
I started at a gym. They took it very slowly with me.
Now I'll go three or four times a week.
I'll do 50 minutes to an hour each time I go and it's good, solid exercise.
(Freddie Buckley) In this country a huge amount of people
have been affected by heart disease and diabetes.
Unfortunately it's set to increase
if we don't change our lifestyle and habits.
Men know they're putting on weight. It's just we don't like to admit it.
Therefore if you think about it,
look at your lifestyle and make some small changes,
you can make a big difference.
