How can I use breathing exercises during labour?

 

Natalie: When you’re in labour it’s very important that you try as much as possible to turn off your mental processes and actually allow your body to instinctively labour.

 

As well as helping you to keep calm when you’re labouring breathing techniques can actually reduce the amount of discomfort that you’re in as well.

 

Practise at home if you can before you are coming into labour so you know what it is you’re going to do together, then your partner is not going to feel that they don’t know what to do or they’re going to feel uncomfortable – they already know how they might help you – and don’t be afraid to tell them what they may be doing is slightly wrong or point them in the right direction because they won’t be able to hear what you’re thinking.

 

It’s different for every woman and it’s very important that you listen to your midwife at every stage of your birth in order that she can help you cope.
