  1. Review titled Best decision I ever made

    by annon36 - Posted on 07 December 2023

I am a male aged 79. I found I was quickly getting out of breath when I walked. I was told by a knowledgeable friend that I probably had a problem with my heart and should seek medical advice. After the usual difficulty in getting a doctor's appointment, I was referred to Bassetlaw Endoscopy for a scan. Having read so many horror stories about the NHS, I was not expecting much to be done. However, I was totally wrong! I found myself being monitored by the Heart Support Unit at Retford. They prescribed various pills, and kept sending me for blood checks at the Manton clinic, presumably to see how I was coping with the side effects. On more than one occasion I was contacted by phone to check that I was ok, before my dosage was increased. Then I was interviewed by the physio who spent around half an hour checking my blood pressure and pulse before and after I had done some marching up and down the room. The physio recommended that I join a gym class at Bassetlaw Hospital. That was the best decision I ever made. These classes are fantastic. Without these classes, I would have assumed that I could not do any exercise and I would basically have just sat around all day. Now I know I can and I feel really well. In addition, I look forward to the gym sessions because we have a good laugh and I can get some iced coffee at the WRVS canteen afterwards. I have just had a follow up scan at the Endoscopy unit and await the results. I can only speak from my own experience, but I found all the staff at the Heart Support Unit to be professional, but also friendly, welcoming and helpful. [Very happy with 'Team work']
