  1. Review titled Appalling - needs investigating / closing down

Impossible to obtain an appointment. I have just experienced the same issues & challenges that I did earlier in 2022. They need overhauling & modernising to provide the service they are meant to give their patients. The Team desperately need managing & given some direction.

  2. Review titled Awful service

Called numerous times this morning couldn’t get through, called 111 who advised to speak with a pharmacist, spoke to the pharmacist who advised to speak to my gp, again could not get through. Called 111 back at 10:15 advised I would receive a call from my gp same day. Now the surgery is closed and no call from the gp. How on earth am I meant to get checked and tests etc when I cannot even get a call back let alone a face to face appointment

  3. Review titled Great practice and follow up

I contacted merchiston surgery by phoning at 8:00 pm and had a call back from doctor very quickly. I was given an appointment that afternoon. The doctor was very thorough and issued me a prescription. I've even had a call back today asking how I am. I cannot fault this service for the care they have given me.

I can not identify with the negative reviews for this surgery and wish more people would document their good experiences. My daughter and I have both sought advice/treatment this week and my husband last week. I have also had face to face appointment with a GP. It can be a challenge getting through for an appointment but this is the case with all GP practices post Covid. This week we have had no issues at all. We have had excellent, prompt service, help and advice. The triage nurse is fab, professional and friendly. Problems with all surgeries are due to a national lack of staff, Covid and years of under investment in our NHS. Thank you Merchiston. Very impressed this week :)

  5. Review titled Impossible to get an appointment

I have not required a visit in 8 years. Tried to call and was excited that line picked up straight away. Oh my. False hope. You have to listen for nearly a minute recorded message before you can escape to reroute number. Then another 30 second message to be put through to an engaged line. Wow I am glad my calls are free. What a shambles. There are still people that are still charged per call. You should be ashamed. This is exactly the reason why I like many others end up at the doors of GWH.

  7. Review titled Worst practice in the area

First I'm not a regular at the gp's as I try and manage my illness as best as I can at home. I have copd and not being able to get through the call system to make an appointment I visited the local A&E who told me to go back to My gp if I did not feel any better after the Hospital supplied me with Antibiotics for a chest infection (its now getting worse). I wanted to see my Gp (I have known them for 20 years) but was told they don't do advances bookings anymore and I would have to call back when they are on site and that would be over 5 days wait. I don't think I can wait any longer seeing as my chest is getting worse. Tried to call to see anyone the next day after the first phone call, guess what No slots available or the call stack is so large you can't get on to the system to make an appointment and if you do then the slots have all gone. The surgery has become so bad I'm now going to wait until my chest is has got to the point when I need to call an ambulance as my local practice is such a shambles. I noticed that the local manager as apologised many times for the lack of booking ability and how many times the forum as complained about the booking ability its a joke as nothing has been done even though they have explained that they were going to have a new phone system installed, this did not work!! Its appointments we need not a nice phone system. Try going back to what your practice was before covid as this worked. Stop using covid as the issue, that has now mainly disappeared. Do the write thing and go back to the old system that worked. Do we have to wait for a death to occur before there is action at this surgery. I think that we all need to send a letter of no confidence to the local authority about this practice or to the local mp to get something done, its a joke but its not even a funny one. Make the change Dr's you are in control, start to think about the patients again like you did when you started practicing all those years ago.

  8. Review titled Appointment system is impossible

Rated 3 stars out of 5

I very rarely need to visit the GP and to be honest the last time I wanted to was 3 years ago. I am shocked by how very difficult it is to make an appointment. Only being able to phone at 08.00 or 12 noon to make a same day phone call with a GP is appalling. I work 08.00 to 16.00 Mon to Fri and my breaks are not at those times so as I am not available at either of those very specific times. I am excluded from health care unless the medical issue should be something that takes me out of work. Life was so much better when for none emergency matters you could ring any time of day and book an in person appointment for a time that was convenient and that you could actually make.

  10. Review titled Impossible to get an appointment

This surgery operates no advance appointments. The only way to get in is to call at 0800 or 1200 every day and hope they still have appointments when you get through. I haven’t been lucky the last 3 times I’ve tried, once sitting in a telephone queue for 90 minutes just to be told to ring back later. They also regularly have an issue where there are too many calls and you sit through the automated queue to just be told to call back to join the queue, bumping you a few minutes back and again unlikely to get an appointment. I would have no issue waiting weeks to be seen, I do have an issue of wasting hours sat in a telephone queue with no idea if I’m going to need to take time off work that morning or not. It’s an impractical solution and is getting to the point now where I’m unlikely to seek medical advice.
