I booked in for a check up at New Road Dental Practice last summer as it was the only practice close me taking new NHS patients (I now know why). It was a two month wait for the appointment, which I appreciate is not the practice’s fault as everyone was struggling with covid backlogs. I left my dental appointment feeling horrible, as I found the dentist rude, patronising and vague about the treatment I needed. He was also rough putting the X-ray papers in my mouth. He told me to book in another session for treatment which ended up being another two months away. I was already feeling very anxious about the thought of having a filling from this dentist as I am a nervous patient and he had shown little care or reassurance during my check up. A few weeks later I started to get some pain and called the receptionist to ask if my appointment could be be moved forward or I could get an emergency appointment. I was told bluntly ‘no’ and no suggestion was given on how to alleviate the pain or where to seek alternative treatment. I decided then to book myself in to a private practice as the thought of going through with any treatment with New Road Practice caused me so much anxiety I was not sleeping. I’ve now had my treatment by a brilliant private dentist who was gentle, communicative and reassuring. It is so sad that this is what dental care in this country has come to. If you pay you get good dental care, if you don’t, you end up with experiences like New Road Dental. I of course don’t solely blame them for this negative experience, if our government properly funded NHS dentists then it would be another story.
