My husband died here and, during his last few days, whilst I tried to be with him most of the time, not one person came in to our room to explain what to expect, to update me on his deterioration or even offer a cup of tea! He had safety rails round the bed, but no-one thought to remove them so I could be close to him, or even find me a comfortable chair whilst I was with him. On my last visit, as I left, I managed to find the nurse on duty - an agency nurse - never met her before - she didn't know me or who my husband was. I expressed concern that I knew he was dying, and that I felt bad leaving him to go home. She told me he would be fine - another few days at least. I left, went home (just minutes away) , showered, had something to eat and rested. Next thing, phone call at 5.45am telling me he had died at 5,30am. When I got back to the home, just minutes later, the carer who let me in didn't know why I was there and she had been one of his regular carers! She went to get the Night Nurse on duty, who then let me into his room. He was stone cold, lying with his mouth wide open, and although I tried to make him look more peaceful, I couldn't. He'd clearly been dead for sometime, and that left me feeling that he'd almost certainly died alone. If I were considering again where to place a loved one who was at end-of- life stage, it certainly would not be here.
