Your NHS guide to having a baby

Choosing where to access care after the birth

If you live in London you can choose where to receive NHS care in the first few weeks after your baby is born

If you live in London, you have a choice about where to receive NHS care in the first eight weeks after you have your baby. This choice will be available to other women in England in the coming months.

Your midwife or health visitor will call you in the first few weeks after your baby is born. You can receive postnatal care in your home or in a health/children’s centre nearby.

A midwife will visit you at home and make sure that you and your baby are healthy. Your midwife will also advise you about your baby’s care in the first few weeks after birth. Your midwife will answer your questions about feeding, sleeping, crying, skin care and the general health and progress of your baby. Your midwife will also arrange any specialist care that you or your baby may need.

You can also choose to receive advice and support from a midwife at a local children’s centre. You will receive all the services offered to women who are cared for at home. In addition, you will get a chance to meet other new mothers and have somewhere safe for your older children to play while you meet your midwife.
