There are usually no signs or symptoms in the early stages of lung cancer. However, as the disease progresses, symptoms develop. Find out more about the symptoms that may indicate lung cancer.

Key messages for lung cancer hide

These are the main symptoms for lung cancer, and if you have any of these you must see your GP:

  • A cough that doesn’t go away after two to three weeks.
  • A long-standing cough gets worse.
  • Persistent chest infections.
  • Coughing blood.
  • Unexplained persistent breathlessness.
  • Unexplained persistent tiredness or lack of energy.
  • Unexplained persistent weight loss.
  • Persistent chest and/or shoulder pain.

However, in the early stages, lung cancer may not cause any symptoms and this can make early diagnosis difficult. Although there are often no symptoms or signs of lung cancer in its very early stages, some patients do have symptoms. Getting medical advice is important in helping to detect the disease as early as possible.
