About Pholcodine linctus and how it works

This medicine helps relieve dry coughs. The main ingredient pholcodine, is a cough suppressant and suppresses dry, tickly coughs.

This medicine is available as a liquid that is taken by mouth.

There may be preparations of this medicine that may be suitable for children. Do not give this medicine to children unless the package leaflet specifically states a suitable dose for children.

Consult your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after five days, or if they get worse during treatment with this medicine.

The following medicines may interact with this medicine:

  • monoamine oxidase inhibitors - do not take this medicine if you are currently taking these medicines or have taken them within the last 14 days
  • other cough and cold medicines
  • neuromuscular blockers
  • medicines that lower blood pressure
  • diuretics
  • central nervous system depressants such as barbiturates, hypnotics, narcotic analgesics, sedatives, tranquillisers, phenothiazines and tricyclic antidepressants

Possible side effects of Pholcodine linctus

Most medicines can cause some side-effects but not everyone having the same medicine will get the same side-effects.

The following side-effects have been associated with people taking this medicine:

  • hypersensitivity reactions
  • anaphylaxis
  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • excitation
  • confusion
  • sputum retention
  • vomiting
  • gastrointestinal disturbances
  • nausea
  • constipation
  • skin reactions including rashes

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
