About Isopto Alkaline and how it works

This medicine helps relieve the symptoms of dry eyes in people who do not produce enough of their own tears or because the tear film in the eye is unstable. It can also be used as a lubricant for artificial eyes. It belongs to a class of medicines called artificial tears. The main ingredient hypromellose works by forming a moist and lubricating film over the eye.

This medicine is available as drops which are put into the eye.

Stop using this medicine and speak to your doctor if symptoms such as eye irritation or eye redness do not improve or if they get worse during treatment with this medicine.

Before using Isopto Alkaline

This medicine may not be suitable for everyone and some people must never have it. Check the leaflet that comes with your medicine to make sure that the medicine is suitable before having it.

Always get advice from a healthcare professional before having this medicine if:

  • you are allergic or sensitive to or have had a reaction to any of the ingredients in the medicine
  • you wear soft contact lenses

Medicine interactions:

If you are taking more than one medicine they may interact with each other. This medicine is unlikely to have any important interactions. But speak to your pharmacist or doctor if you get any unusual symptoms while having this medicine with other medicines.

Possible side effects of Isopto Alkaline

Most medicines can cause some side-effects but not everyone having the same medicine will get the same side-effects.

The following side-effects have been associated with people having this medicine:

  • blurred vision
  • headache, eye pain or vision changes - stop using this medicine and seek medical advice if you get any of these symptoms
  • irritation - stop using this medicine and seek medical advice if the irritation persists or worsens
  • redness - stop using this medicine and seek medical advice if continued redness occurs
  • foreign body sensation

If you experience other side effects or have any other worrying symptoms while you are having this medicine, seek medical advice.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are trying to become pregnant, are pregnant, or are breast-feeding, you should seek medical advice before having this medicine.

Other important information

Make sure that you read the leaflet that comes with your medicine to check what dose you should have and if there is anything that you need to do if you have more than the recommended dose. If you are in any doubt about whether this medicine is suitable for you, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

This medicine may temporarily cause blurred vision. This may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Do not drive or operate machinery unless your vision is clear.

Take care the dropper does not touch the surface of the eye or any other surface when you put the drops into your eyes. This is because you may contaminate the remaining contents of the bottle.

You must dispose of the bottle and any remaining contents after four weeks of opening it. It is a good idea to make a note of the date when you first opened it.

Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
