Staying active in winter for seniors

Cold weather can lead to ill health and depression, particularly in people aged over 60. One way to staying healthy is to keep active. Don’t let bad weather put you off moving around as even light exercise can help to keep you warm and improve your mood.

Wrap up warm

While it is important to keep active, if you are going out in the cold weather remember to wrap up warm:

  • You should wear plenty of thin layers, rather than one thick one
  • You should put on a coat, hat, scarf, gloves and warm shoes or boots and make sure you have suitable, non-slip, footwear in icy or snowy conditions
  • You should wear clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy synthetic fibres

Get out and about

There are plenty of clubs and activities to keep you busy around Lambeth. For a list see Activities for seniors. Read about how other Lambeth residents have benefitted from keeping active in Active at any age.

Happy Bus Pass Outings, which are open to anyone who has a Freedom Pass will be running throughout the winter on Mondays and Wednesdays from the Waterloo Action Centre. For details of all the trips coming up click here.

There are clubs for all of the community in Lambeth and you can find details of many of them on Lambeth Council’s website.

Keep active

The Active Walks Programme will also run throughout the winter and you can find details of all the walks here.

Check on the elderly in the cold

Age UK Lambeth is encouraging us all to check on our neighbours during the cold weather, particularly if they are elderly or disabled as they are more vulnerable to health problems in bad weather.
