Discussing the results with your patient 

Results should be given in person wherever possible. We suggest that the post-test discussion should include:

Negative antibody result:

  • Ways of avoiding infection in the future

Positive antibody result:

  • Advise patient not to donate blood or carry an organ donor card

Positive HCV RNA result:

  • Advise patient to stop or reduce alcohol consumption
  • Ways of avoiding infecting others
  • Consider the need to test other family members or close contacts

Negative HCV RNA results:

  • Advise patient to have a second HCV RNA test after 4-6 weeks to confirm their negative status
