How to test

An initial antibody test should be carried out to determine whether the person has ever been infected with hepatitis C in the past.

If the test is positive, a GP or specialist should carry out further tests to establish whether the virus is still present in the body.

A HCV RNA detection test, such as a polymerase chain reaction test (PCR), will identify if there's hepatitis C current circulating in the body. A liver biopsy will show the degree of damage to the liver.
