I gave up cigarettes
on 17th June 2007.
21st June 2004.
28th May 2006.
30th June 2007.
6th July 2005.
(laughs)
(man) Every year thousands of people
go smoke-free,
and this year you could be one of
them.
Going smoke-free is the single
most important thing you can do
to dramatically increase your
chances
of living a longer, healthier life.
My health's back.
I can fire up a hill now
without running out of breath.
(man)
And there are many other benefits too.
More cash in your pocket, more energy.
I've been able to buy more clothes.
I'm just being honest with you.
Because we smoked 60 a day,
we're saving over £500 a month.
(man) Many smokers want to go
smoke-free but aren't sure how to do it.
One thing's for sure.
Success isn't just about willpower.
It's about being practical.
Having a plan and having people
on your side to support you.
I've tried stopping on my own
and it would last for a weekend
or a day or two.
I didn't think I'd be able to do it.
I wouldn't have been able to do it
just on my own.
(man) Quitting can be tough,
but getting support and using a
product
like tablets or patches
dramatically increases
your chances of success.
In fact, doing it this way you're
up to four times more likely to succeed
than if you try to quit alone.
I don't think I'd have been able
to do it without the help of the group.
We all have a laugh
because everybody's in the same boat.
If I didn't have the support
I wouldn't know where to turn.
(man) There's a wide range
of support you can get, all for free,
and loads of information on how to
quit.
You could start by exploring the
website
or calling the NHS smoking helpline,
where you can chat
to a trained specialist advisor.
The NHS Stop Smoking Services
run group and one-to-one courses
in your local area.
You'll get support
from the course leaders
and plenty of one-to-one advice
and guidance.
If you can't make it to a course,
the NHS Together Programme,
designed by ex-smokers,
gives you information and
encouragement
at home.
Thousands of people have done it
and succeeded
with the help of support
that was right for them.
They've done it.
They've stopped smoking
and started living.
You could be next.
- Go for it.
- Don't burn money.
I don't think about cigarettes
at all now.
Group sessions work.
You've got to try it, you really
have.
I'm feeling
absolutely on top of the world.
I feel really proud of Mum,
that she's given up.
Just do it.
