Menopause - Symptoms

Symptoms of the menopause

Protecting your bones from osteoporosis

Loss of bone bulk and osteoporosis are natural features of ageing, but loss of oestrogen accelerates the process in women who have gone through the menopause.

You can reduce your risk of osteoporosis by doing short, frequent sessions of weight-bearing exercise, eating plenty of calcium, giving up smoking and moderating alcohol consumption. If you cannot get enough calcium from your diet, it may be worth trying calcium supplements. See your doctor before you start taking these.

Menopause: how your GP can help

Find out how your GP can help if you have symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats.

It is estimated that 8 out of 10 women in the UK experience symptoms leading up to the menopause. Of these, 45% find their symptoms difficult to deal with.

In most cases, the first symptom is a change in the usual pattern of your periods. Your period may start every two to three weeks, or you may not have one for months at a time. The amount of menstrual blood lost may also change, and most women find it increases slightly.

Other common symptoms of the menopause (and the months just before and after this) are detailed below.

Without treatment, most menopausal symptoms gradually stop naturally. This usually happens two to five years after the symptoms start, although some women experience symptoms for many more years.

Hot flushes and night sweats

A hot flush is a sudden feeling of heat in your upper body, which can start in your face, neck or chest, before spreading upwards and downwards.

The skin on your face, neck and chest may become red and patchy, and you may start to sweat. You may also experience a change in your heart rate. It may become very rapid, or it may be irregular and stronger than usual (known as palpitations).

Hot flushes that occur at night are called night sweats. Most hot flushes only last a few minutes and are most common in the first year after your final period.

Sleep disturbance

Many menopausal women have trouble sleeping due to night sweats, but sleep disturbance may also occur as a result of anxiety.

You may find that a lack of sleep makes you irritable, and that you have problems with your short-term memory and ability to concentrate.

Vaginal symptoms

During the time leading up to the menopause, you may experience vaginal dryness, itching or discomfort. This can make sex difficult or painful (known as dyspareunia). These symptoms combined are known as vaginal atrophy.

Approximately one-third of women experience the symptoms of vaginal atrophy shortly after the menopause, and slightly more women have them later on. It is possible to experience vaginal atrophy more than 10 years after your final period.

If you experience vaginal symptoms, it is likely that they will persist or worsen over time unless they are treated.

Urinary symptoms

During the menopause, you may become prone to recurrent lower urinary tract infections, such as cystitis. You may also experience an urgent need to pass urine and need to pass it more often than normal.

I am 52 years old and have been experiencing what i now believe to be menopausal symptoms since mid January of this year. I missed a period for the first time and have been suffering muscle and joint pain in my upper back and shoulders and soreness in my chest and boobs. I have been to the doctors several times and its not been suggested on any of these occasions that it could be the menopause, despite seeing two different doctors.(male)
I have also been waking up several times during most nights. I have been told to take ibuprofen 3 times a day and blood tests have returned normal, I have also had xrays on my back which i am awaiting the results. Does anyone else believe this could be the menopause and why on earth havent the doctors suggested this could be the problem.( i have also experienced dizziness and anxiety.)

So interesting to read everyone's personal journey.

I have suffered with menopausal symptoms for the last 5 years (from the age of 40). Unfortunately, this has never been taken seriously by the doctors I have seen. I was fitted with a Mirena coil 4 years ago which they said would help. I did in the first couple of years, but it's effects gradually wore off and the menopausal symptoms returned more strongly.

It is only today at 45 (soon to be 46) that they have reluctantly agreed to put me on a 3 month trial of HRT (Elleste Duet 1mg). Here's hoping it works!!

I would encourage other sufferers of an early menopause to keep visiting the doctor until they agree to take your situation seriously. I wish I had been a bit more persistent. Don't suffer in silence.

Aged 47. Have period only once a year for the past seven years, usually at Xmas or as I leave to go on holiday! Always hot, have taken to putting a fan in my handbag when out as fed up of being hot and sweaty and trying to look good. No breast pains, gradual weight gain over the years. Fed up of GP not knowing if im meopausal and him not being concerned. Arent I supposed to be looking after myself if I am. Take iron tablets every so often for a low Hb and fed up of my GP saying its my age and heavy periods! Wish hed read my case notes once in a while. Am I so different to everyone else with my lack of periods and why arent I having those heavy, elongated periods, not that im complaining ladies. Am I menopausal?

I started having eratic periods 6 months ago and also suffered extreme tiredness, dizzyness and difficulty sleeping at night. I was tired all the time, barely able to do anything more than eat and get dressed. My doctor took a blood sample which proved norma, took my blood pressure which was a little higher than normal, checked my breasts for lumps and thenafter hearing about all my symptoms he prescribed magnesium supplements. After about a week I began to have increased energy levels and am now in a good frame of mind, positive and optomistic, whereas before I was quite depressed.

hi just to say how sorry i am for all of us women going throught he menopause at the mo, especially the younger ones. i have suffered for years with anxiety and it did start to get better however the last couple of years it has come back and i think it is just one of the symptoms of the menopause........... along with many others the night sweats got so bad i didn't no what to do so i got the magnet from lady care and at the same time started to take black cohosh, they have improved but i'm not sure which one of the above have helped although i did run out of the black cohosh at xmas and began to fell bad again.
i haven't had a good nights sleep in months and feel so tired all the time and don't have an ounce of the energy i used to have. my memory is bad which used to be good i feel bloated a lot of the time and the painful boobs seem to go from one to the other.
i do have horrible black thoughts about death ect which isn't too nice and then that makes me panic.
i need to go to the loo a lot which i never had to before and a lot of the time have dizzy spells. i trying to think of something good to say !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
still it seems wea are all in the same boat and it does give you a bit of comfort to know we're not alone in this.
hope you all feel better soon.

After having a baby at 41 and breastfeeding for a year, my periods had only just started up again when they stopped for 6 months. During that time the hot flushes and night sweats kicked in. Had blood tests which showed my hormone levels were raised but not significantly. Periods started up again, irratically, then stopped again for 4 months and have just started up again! A female locom at my practice said I should give serious thought to HRT but I have been bounced around like a hot potato by my male GP who told me I was simply depressed and gave me anti depressants. That did a lot for my mood swings I can tell you! I have little energy and patience works on a minute by minute basis! I now find I am having a lot of trouble with my joints aching and have developed a muffin top! I have, however, been using the product Lady Care day and night and have not had a single flush or night sweat since. All I wanted was my GP to reassure me that this was all perfectly normal and advise me how to deal with it, instead I've been left feeling like I've just about lost the plot. So, Thank you ladies for the reassurance you have given me and for helping me realise I'm not the only one banging their head against a brick wall.

Hi! I'm 51. Since 2009 my health has taken a beating! Eventually diagnosed with gallstones, and gallbladder removed 2010. End of all my problems, yes? NO! I was taking Norethisterone to relieve painful and heavy irregular blood loss.... a wonder drug! Then after a few missed periods, over 6 to 8 months my dr suggested stopping norethisterone tabs.... no real menopause problems, memory a bit mushy after being sharp as a pin! But suddenly, very painful joints, especially my knees.... I was wondering if anyone else noticed arthritic type symptoms with their menopause? Would love to hear from anybody out there! Many thanks!

Hi Lisat38 your symptoms are exactly the same as mine. I too had a hysterectomy nearly two years ago for the same reason (I'm now 42) and are having all the symptoms of menopause but without being able to judge, by not having any periods, it's difficult knowing if it is or not. I do remember reading that after a hysterectomy you will go through the menopause within five years...so I'm pretty certain this is what's happening now.

I would like to thank you all for posting on here regarding the menopause. I am 48 and have always had regular periods, until recently that is. Now I seem to be constantly in period mode. Started off with two days really really light, two days clear and then whoosh two heavy weeks followed by wipe bleeds and spotting ever since. (About 3 + weeks now). I was getting worried thinking.i was ill and feeling sad inside. Just like jester housework is a no no, just.do what i really have to. I am normally very friendly.and chatty but can't be bothered a lot of the time and just want to be left alone. I don't mind being on the change, end of periods, fantastic - eventually. Thank you all for talking.

I've just turned 48. Up until a couple of years ago periods were regular & light. They then became extremely heavy with clots, so much so that the 1st time, my husband & i both thought i was miscarrying. Tried Tranexamic acid to help flow but this just prolonged the period so decided just to battle thru each month. I was so heavy & painful that the 1st day of each month was spent in bed. I should point out that i am on fentanyl patches & oramorph following spinal surgery 5 years ago but still the 1st day gave me considerable pain in my back. I put up with it, & the odd flush & night sweat until my last period, 9 1/2 weeks ago! Since then, i initially experienced a couple of weeks dreadful hot flushes & night sweats & now am just warm in general. I have had some spotting on & off about a week ago. No sore boobs or bloating, tho i do feel flabbier around my midriff ( i'd lost 2stones on my medication down to around 9 stone & am now about 91/2) no loss of libido!!! I'm so extremely tired all the time but had been blaming my medication til reading the above comments, & have gone from being houseproud to barely lifting a duster & despite feeling so lazy & guilty, just couldn't do it. I don't work as was medically retired due to my condition & my husband never moans if his tea isn't ready - he'll just get on & make it! Iron his own shirts if i haven't "managed" to do it. I'm so thankful women have taken the time to comment as reading the above has made me feel so much better. I'm just worried as to why my boobs aren't sore & bloated & why my sex drive is ok - am i going thru the menopause or not?! Oh 1 other thing, whilst i don't feel depressed as such, i do think about death a lot, be it mine, my family, even the dog & just know i would go to pieces if even the dog died at the moment. Can anyone confirm if this is it please! Thank you

Just completed 51. Had a few ocasions of hot flushes at night and mood swings before my period gone for a break 2 months ago. Also had low energy levels and lack of concentration. Libido was on a stand still for yonks. Then all of a sudden everything changed! That is what worries me! My sex drive has gone up the chimney. I do wake up in the night but with heat elsewhere but the face. Get powerful whole body contractions that wake me up immediately, 3 or 4 times a night. My appetite reduced and I've lost 4 pounds in one month. Could never shift 4 pounds come hell or high water before. Everybody is noticing me now as before I was invisible. Quite intimidating really. Had never had anything like that before. Like I was put on an scientific experiment without me knowing it. I seem to be melting by the heat and it can happen anytime even at work. My menopause is upside-down now! Should I worry? Quite bizarre! Not taking any medicine or HRT. Just vitamin E and joints tablets. Has anybody had similar experience?

I'm 45, not pregnant but my period is a no show. I have period pains and painful boobs and sometimes my chest feels sweaty when I wake in the night and mornings. Reading the other comments, many of you other ladies have the same symtoms, painful boobs, period pains but no period. Is this the start of the change, and are these symptoms the norm?

I'm confused... you see I'm 40yrs old soon to be 41 and for the past 3 years I had implanon fitted, now I have it removed but haven't had a proper period for 3 months.. I've done tests and know I'm not pregnant so could it be the menopause starting? My symptoms include mood swings can be very happy to flood of tears in less than the time it takes to boil the kettle, every night I get night sweats, starting on my throat moving down to my chest, I find it very diificult to go to the loo, it's too pain. After exercize when I go to the loo I pass blood sometimes (not all the time) even if I've only been walking a short while. My joints ache, and although I am overweight I am trying very hard to lose weight. I'm really scared to go to the Doctor incase she thinks I'm an idiot, please help as I don't feel I have any kind of life at the mo! Makenna x

I`m 51 and still having regular periods which are getting closer together and heavier. I wish they would stop as I hate having periods, they ruin any chance of a half decent social life. I don`t get many hot flushes but I do get night sweats, insomnia, aching joints, weight gain, constant tiredness and a lack of enthusiasm for anything. Boobs are sore all month although sex drive not particularly affected, older husband is losing his! I feel mildly depressed much of the time and don`t have the energy to exercise etc, I also have mood swings. Went to see a male doctor who refused to take me seriously and I came away feeling stupid.
Is this what the perimenopause is like? If you can get HRT apparently you feel like a new woman within days! Will have to keep trying until I find a doctor to actually help.

Kimberley
I am 48 in a week's time and what you say sounds so familiar!
I used to be a nice slim 9 stone 3 and am not a hefty stone more (not that tall).
I have had incredibly erratic periods in the last year - 5 in 4 months, then nothing, then regular monthly ones over the summer and nothing now since end of august,
I feel permanently bloated, painful boobs like my period is about to happen.
I am grumpy moany, depressed, liable to cry when driving or alone, gone right off sex (husband not happy).
And tired - all the time!
I exercise 3 to 4 times a week aerobically and weights so i cannot believe the weight gain and tiredness!
I hate this stuff happening to me.
I feel like i am standing on the precipice of being an old bag - gone off nice clothes, having to force msyelf to make an effort.
and hungry all the time though trying not to eat too much!
at least otehr people seem to be going through this stuff like me!

I am 53 and have been in the menopause for a couple of years. My symptoms are; aching muscles, aching joints, stiff joints: of the neck, back, shoulders, arms; bad sleep pattern, pain in my back where my kidneys are at night making turning over in bed very painful..this pain mysteriously disappears once I am up and out of bed. .. Calmness one day, anxiety the next, exhaustion, lack on interest or enthusiasm some days, hot, clammy face but no flushes thankfully yet... the list goes on and on.

I go to the gym at least once a week and tone my muscles and use the treadmill and rowing machine to strengthen my muscles. I cycle every day to work which is a mile each way approx and have quite an active job. My libido was nil about a year ago so my doc put me in touch with the menopause clinic and I am now on testosterone implants which really help with the libido but of course does nothing for the constant aches and pains. I don't want to go on HRT mainly because I think all it does is delay the inevitable. I take vitamins and iron as my once heavy periods made me anemic. I try to eat a healthy diet. Dont really know what else to do except to try to eat healthy, try to maintain a healthy weight for your height and age, get regular exercise and take supplements if needed. I also use Rescue remedy to help me sleep and if does help.

Have started to take sage tablets, iron tablets and now waiting for a miracle! Also started hot flushes during the day but can deal with these.
And dont even get me started on my zero sex drive!

Can anyone help with acne?

I can cope with sleep disturbance, hot sweats and the mood swings but acne is tipping me over the edge.

I have tried an exfoliator, Freederm and have stopped using any other cream, in the hope that if I stopped adding oil it would help, but the acne appears to be spreading, if anyone has any suggestions I would be so grateful.

I am perimenopausal and have some odd symptoms, I have very vivid dreams almost every night (but no night sweats) and when I'm not having the usual hot flushes I have a throbbing sensation in my face and upper body....a bit like the feeling when you have been out walking on a cold day or after exercise. Also struggling to keep my weight under control. Does anyone else? I'm not depressed but do get very over emotional and sentimental about the past.......don't even show me babies, puppies or kittens, I just weep!! I don't feel like 'me' anymore and I do feel 'old' .........

hot flushes, painful joints, nightmares, dark moods - im sad to say are a few of the symptoms im finding, my periods became irregular at the age of 37, and at the age of 48, it is eighteen months since my last period. My GP would not test me until i was 45 as he said that i was too young. I continuously told him that my sisters were young when they started with it, but he didnt listen and had me examined with cameras etc to find out what the problem was. He is an excellent doctor with everything else, but with this, not very good. my depression gets quiet bad at times but he will NOT give me hormone replacement. God girls - if men only knew what we went through.

The second tip is to follow a balanced diet. Menopause is most likely to occur when the estrogen levels in the body drop drastically, so in order to prevent this from happening, eat foods that boost estrogen levels. In this regard, foods such as soy and whole grains can help as they are rich in estrogen while herbs such as dong quai and black kohosh too have been known to postpone menopause symptoms.
