Blood gases test

Introduction

A blood gases test is used to check how well your lungs are working and whether they are able to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide efficiently.

The test may be recommended if you are having breathing problems, such as shortness of breath or rapid breathing.

The test results will show whether there is an imbalance of oxygen (O2) or carbon dioxide (CO2) which could indicate a respiratory (breathing), metabolic (chemical) or kidney disorder.
