Introduction

Watch this...

A nurse describes how a cardiovascular risk assessment can detect whether you're at risk of heart disease.

Beta-blockers (also known as beta-adrenoreceptor blocking agents) are used to treat many different conditions.

Common uses include:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Angina.
  • Heart failure.
  • Atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat).
  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction).

Less common uses include:

  • Prevention of migraine.
  • Overactive thyroid (thyrotoxicosis).
  • Anxiety conditions.
  • Tremor.

They can also be used as eye drops to treat glaucoma (increased pressure in the eyes).
