What does a sex therapist do?

For many people, good sex comes naturally. But at one time or another, you might have a problem with your sex life. You or your partner could be having problems reaching orgasm or you might have stopped having sex. You could be having difficulty getting aroused, or find that sex is over too quickly. You might even find that sexual activity is taking up a great deal of your life, and affecting your personal and social relationships.

Some sexual problems go away in time or can be treated by your GP. However, another option is sex therapy. Sex therapists offer help to people with sexual problems. They are trained counsellors or healthcare professionals who have done extra training in the physical and emotional issues linked to sex.

Seeing a sex therapist will help you see your situation from a completely different viewpoint, to help you understand your problem better. They will ask questions and help you find out if there are any emotional or physical reasons behind your problem. They may also give you exercises and tasks you can do in your own time. You'll never be asked to undertake sexual tasks in a session.

Sex therapists have heard of every type of problem before, so they won't judge you or be embarrassed. Each session is completely confidential. You can even see a sex therapist by yourself, but if your problem affects you as a couple, you should both try to attend.

For most sexual problems, it's a good idea to see your GP first. Your GP can then refer you to a sex therapist if they think it will help your problem. However, sex therapy is not available on the NHS in some parts of the country.

You can also find a sex therapist yourself. Some organisations, such as Relate, can offer reduced fees if you are on a low income. For details of sex therapists in your area, you can call the British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy (BASRT) on 020 8543 2707 or look in your local business directory.

Wherever you decide to go, make sure your therapist is fully qualified.
